1200 Another Fuel Sender Issue?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Chris1H, Sep 26, 2022.

  1. Fill up and see how you get on, but reset the trip to be safe.

If it happens again, insulation tape is your friend.

  2. no way would i bank on 180 to 200 mile range, even if riding with a great deal of restraint !
I ran my 2012 MTS dry at 138 miles on Saturday (my fuel sender is dicking about too).
This was admittedly after a very spirited afternoon of riding.

Usually I look to fill up around 130 miles, and no more than 150 unless I have been low revs / high gears cruising.
130 is usually when the warning light comes on for me, with 20 miles range left shown.

With respect to the sensor, it fails for 1 of 2 reasons:
    - the solder joints on the reed switches fail, or
    - the float gets hung up in the track (some suggest it swells with E10, others say its due to molding flashes not removed)
Both can be fixed if you can be bothered to remove and repair it. I would suggest you have it changed and if they will give you the old one maybe repair it and keep it as a spare.

Be aware the sensors they now supply state that if fitted to a 2010 to 2012 bike, the dash needs to be reflashed too. This is because they are supplying a common part, and on the older bike it reads back to front unless reprogrammed.

    Hope that helps :)

  3. @Siddo you have disagreed with my post, but not replied to say which part of it (all of it ?)
I stand by everything I have said above.
Assuming you didnt click the wrong button and mean range, I have never in 10 years of ownership got more than 180 miles out of my 2012, and that was an exception. My MTS owning riding buddies with pre-dvt bikes get similar range to me, so I am not alone. The trip pooter normally shows around ~39mpg, and if really having fun down to 36mpg.

Chris, At least now you know not everyone can get 200 out of a tank, and can make your own mind up as to how far you want to risk between fills based on how you ride, regardless of whether you agree with my post or not :yum

  4. I think it is all the alcohol in petrol now, I am only using the 5 % stuff in al my vehicles. Had problems with a fuel pump connection and I am not the only one.

  5. Some super unleaded and a bit of fuel system cleaner and I am back in operation. I think I will stick with E5 and see how I get on!

  6. I only use Super since the last replacement, so hopefully it’s a winner.

The difference in price is probably the same as a new sender after a few thousand miles though :D

  7. The most I ever got from a tank on 2013 MTS was 175 miles and then it ran out of petrol. That’s over a 10 year period.

But if you’re making good progress, then the range can dip to 120-130 miles.
