Good book ! Honest , frank , and disturbing account of childhood poverty caused by the callous greed of the " ruling classes " , in this case , the mill owners . Made me think of the millions of nameless others who suffered the same fate but didn't write a book . Couldn't happen in this day and age .... ?
The road to Wigan pier was widely misunderstood particularly by the people of Wigan. They thought Mr Orwell was mocking them, when in fact it was an accurate documentation or the appalling living conditions of the working class, as with Down and Out in Paris and London, also a good, go back to, read.
Like all the best fiction, it has some factual content to make it plausible. The plot is a bit thin though.
