Are Macs past their best??

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by funkyrimpler, Jun 20, 2013.

  1. I'd love to help, Redsail, but as we are in Switzerland... you'd have to combine your system makeover with a short holiday.

Mind you, there are many worse places to come.

  2. Yes, Mission Control is a load of bollocks. We install it on our machines (because it comes with the system) and then park it somewhere where no one is going to use it. You don't need that rubbish on our machines, as all the apps are cunningly put into folders in the Dock (with custom icons) which makes launching anything a breeze.

  3. Macs should be for people who need to use computers but don't want to. If you have to piss about with it, then that's the whole point lost.

  4. Heh, what are the roads like? You might get a visit from me on my 848 with Mac Tube strapped to my back :)

  5. i dont need a Ducati...but i do need a computer...that is reliable..shit the sun is shining as much as my bike...i might take it out.

    for a polish.

  7. The roads are the business. No problem on that score.

  8. But if you don't know how to piss about with it, then you don't need a computer - you need an iPhone.

  9. I can't actually tell if you're joking or not Mac.

I need a computer to.... compute. Not to piss about with. If I'm pissing about I'm not getting work done and not earning any money. That IS the point of a Mac and why I use them: its a computer you don't need to piss about with.

  10. You wouldn't get much Excel done on an iPhone.

My view of computers is a little the same as bikes. I just want it to work when I want to use it. I don't want to invest my time and energy constantly cajoling it, or fettling it, or worrying about whether it is happy. The designers and the professionals are meant to do that. I do other things.

The only major difference is that I feel an emotional attachment to my bike, and none to my computer. The Mac is just a machine that is to get things done for me, ditto iPhone. If it breaks or dies, I couldn't care less beyond the hassle and expense.

  11. But you care about whether you can ride a bike well or not, yes?

  12. ho hum..off topic..

  13. All the Apple bashing that goes on because of their iDevices sucsess bemuses me. I couldn't care less if they are the biggest consumer device manufacturer, or about the fancy stores, or how cool punters think the brand is. As long as Apple keep making high-quality pro hardware as they have done (just a bit more frequently please!) and don't completely dilute OSX with fluff I'm happy.

I don't give a hoot what my Macs look like, and like Glidd I have no attachment to them on any level other than the functional. They are workhorses and I think most pros feel the same. I do however have a huge soft spot for the OS as I've spent a lot of my life with it (System 6 and a Mac Classic, then a IIfx, whoa! feel the power!) and especially in the earlier versions (OS 6 through 9) you could really sense the personalities and the care and attention to detail and late nights that went into creating it. It's an incredibly beautifully crafted thing, or was. OS X has all the technical abilities I used to dream about (protected memory, UNIX core blah di blah) but it's arguably a more sterile OS, despite being technically better in every way. I guess not so dissimilar to bikes then.

  14. Most of us real pros prefer PCs

My point about the bike, funkyrimpler, was that one doesn't usually expect to be able to ride well without either a lot of training or years of experience. So why people expect to be able to use computers well without the same is mystery to me. That's the only reason Apple has done as well as it has - it's catered for the vast majority of people who are never going to be GP riders.

  15. if you read my original post my comment was questioning the reliability of the newer crop of Macs, not the users ability to manipulate the OS.
as others have said, i dont give a fig about computers per se, i just want it to work..your motogp rider analogy would be more accurate if you'd said motogp mechanic. Windows has always relied on users doing the housekeeping, OSX traditionally has done most of this itself, thats a key difference, but is not relevant to my post.
As i said, ive been a Mac user for nearly 20 years, and whilst im certainly not an expert (i simply dont have the interest in computers), im not a mug.
There are plenty of training manuals published for all operating systems...no one realistically expects to enrol on a training course in order to navigate their way around an OS..they certainly do so if they wish, but it isnt (or shouldnt) be a pre requisite...software, such as Logic or Final Cut is much more complex and may require training, certainly a lot more hours behind the wheel.
my argument is that for years Apple have made superbly integrated high end computers (even though they have monopolised most high end software media companies...emagic for example who make Logic), but in recent years, as they have pushed into general consumer electronics, the foundation of the company, computers, seem to me, to be less reliable and well built than their predecessors and the newer operating systems, although packing in more features, have not become easier, more pleasing, stable, or inspiring to use..their attention has diverted to the (more?) profitable products such as phones and itunes licenses. this leaves a bitter taste after years of brand loyalty (purely because they work-ed), and investment of time and money...and as such, in my view, they have become as much a fashion statement as they are a computer manufacturer...which i dislike personally, but as long as the computers were great, who cares...but now they are using more and more cheaper components throughout the machine from china or wherever, instead of high quality, tested and branded components.
For the punter on the street, Apple make phones first and foremost...in fact, i would hazard a guess and suggest that most people had never even heard of Macintosh computers until the release of the iPod.

Although outside of the areas where i have worked (music) or some of my mates (film editing and graphic design), no one has used anything but, for as long as i can remember..every music i ever been in, University with a music dept only use Macs...when i did my degree we had a 'Mac Suite', as they do in a local college.

As an fyi I have Acer iconia tab w500 since 2011 (2y now). Battery still holds 3.5h when as new and device was 499 gbp and is a cheap tablet like Intel atom based netbooks but from AMD.

Sorry but as will Apple well setup windows will fly but it is sales people that fail often.

I was in pc world and heard sales person saying to people to buy Norton for their new windows 8 pc as we all know windows 8 has no antivirus .... and their display pc's had all had built in firewall and antivirus switched off. Nice out of box making it worse ;)

Mac has a point as well everyone expects to know how to use pc so do not care learning anything. Opening doors for scams that you need to change your 2y old pc as it is to slow now. Current cheap new home us pc's are nothing more then fast machines from 3y ago that worked on internet then .....

  19. Back to the original topic, yes the latest Macs are not as good as they used to be. I've seen a gradual slide in quality over the years. The white Macbook probably being the worst put together machine I've owned. Had a Wallstreet G3, then an ibook G3 then ibook G4 14" then the Macbook. The wallstreet was beautifully put together and ibook G3 was also built like a brick shit house. My Macbook has bits falling off it. Its a piece of shit.

But that's consumer stuff (never owned any of the 'pro' laptops as I don't use them for work) and as stated before the quality of all the cheesegrater Mac Pros is very very high. If anything I've seen an increase in quality of the towers over the years. I hope the tube/bin continues the trend.
