998 Are Ohlins Steering Dampers Worth It

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Wazza, Apr 12, 2015.

  1. i agree, they do it better but how many off us do really need the upgrade.
i know i don't really need it but still i have onlins steering dampers on both my 888 and 916.
i just like the looks off it.

@Wazza:thanks on the dog, they are a great breed.
he is 4 years old now

    henk!!!

  2. i fitted one on a base 1098 and think it was the best upgrade I had. really noticed a difference. I didn't thread lock the mounting bolt and it loosened, I immediately noticed something wasn't ok and pulled over and checked the entire bike over before I found the cause.........so yes in my view they are worth it.
I also was almost thrown off my sp1 with a tank slapper and went straight out and bought a sprint damper,no more probs.

if your going to fit something then fit the best you can afford even if 2nd hand, also its worth it for the bling.

  3. Wazza, if you can afford it get one for the bling, otherwise don't waste your money, also second hand ones without history are not the answer as they are often removed from crash write offs and can be damaged in many ways. The OEM one does what needs to be done perfectly well and they rarely go wrong. Spend the money instead (with a wad of change as well) on getting your ride height and shocks set up correctly by someone who knows how to do it properly, it will make a much greater improvement than any steering damper mod. It will resolve the front end vagueness/twitchyness and odd tyre wear and restore the planted feel and feedback from both wheels. You would be amazed at how badly set up some bikes are (you can see immediately when they are wrong if you know what to look for) and more often than not they are the blinged ones that have been lavished with money on shiny sh!t with no thought to proper set up. Ironically they sometimes do this to resolve handling issues on bikes that were badly set up in the first place.

  4. Yes there's a good bloke in Leeds & he's not that expensive my mate took his Diavel to him last year the bike handled soo much better that's on my hit list as a nice day out this summer, I do agree with the second hand problem experienced that a few times already, there are a few items I want but do I finish the whole Ohlins job now or wait
