Are They All Just Silly Money? 916 Etc

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Phill748, Dec 28, 2015.

  1. Then you should go for the '94 Strada original that I was going to go for - they will be worth the most of the standard bikes and still have a lot of profit in them over the next few years. Only about 1300 made. They may even climb to similar levels of the SPS and R's before long. Usually the first of the breed is worth the most before long :)

  2. What happened with @beachtone 's 1098R? You'll not find a better one in my opinion.

  3. A compromise that was acceptable to both of us not there, which was fine. Tony is a very genuine, nice guy and hopefully we parted amicably. Andy

  4. The 996R was the first with the Testa motor in it this used sand cast cases IIRC, the 998 was then released with the same bore & stroke die cast cases, shallow on the Bip deep on the S. The 998R motor was different it had a larger bore and shorter stroke.

  6. I definitely believe sellers are trying their luck but that in itself will start the price increase as they will not suddenly start advertising lower prices.
I bought my 97 in 2013 (not for an investment) but from what i can see in the last 2.5 years good ones are roughly £1.5k - £2k more than 2013. I dont mind obviously

  9. I recently bought a 998s, apparently the 998s has similar cams to the 996r.
The "s" is not the same as the stock 988 and makes more power.

Wiki: "The non US 998S as well as the 998R had revised cam profiles which provided more power than the standard 998. The 998R model used a 104.0 mm × 58.8 mm (4.09 in × 2.31 in) mm bore and stroke which actually displaced 999 cc, and was very similar to the engine used in the subsequent 999R model."

Ducati 998 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia as above.

The 998r is actually a 999 engine if that is correct?
I am not sure if the 998R uses the same cam's as the S? so, 1 cc difference, what about valves, compression etc?

For me the 998(s) was a good compromise (in my restricted budget) newer design motor than the non 996r range (which were in my budget) The the 988(s) similar engine performance + classic iconic shape (similar to) a 996R but much less expensive.

I guess the r's have better folks etc and the bikes are much less common so much more desirable.

I would have paid the premium for an R if I did not have so many other things to spend my money on. This bike was only to take out on sunny days and I'm happy with it so far.

  10. The 999 (998cc) engine was designed for the 999 bike and used in the 998 initially. Treblanch told Mr Faloon late in 2000 the 999 was ready to go as a design as he sat looking at a completed one in his office ;)
This is why the 999 Earth point is already in the 998 bikes engine: for when the battery moved to the left of the frame - I use this Earth on my cable kits.
Not sure if the 999 was due to launch earlier or if a decision was made to delay the launch at any point to prove the engine, or for some other financial reason.
All 999 bike are actually 998cc apart from the R's.
