  2. Presumably this interpretation could be challenged in a court of law but upon what grounds and what probability of success ?

  3. but by definition that would be sucking an apple.

  6. This year while on Holiday in Scarborough I can remember walking towards the lifeboat station with the wife and two dogs when I did notice a Police van being driven by a very overweight female who was DRINKING a can of coke, and I thought to myself "she aint much use in a dynamic or desperate physical situation" or something very similar!

Maybe a fresh post of : Seen Any Act Of Hypocrisy Today?

I fart when driving and have to lean to one side to release the gases, would this be considered carelessness? When on the bike I just stand on the footpegs for relief but I still feel very much in control and the Termis mask the blast!

This is all getting very silly, and as for speeding, Good as gold in the car ( watched too many Russian dash cam vids!) but on the bike out the 40's, the sound of those Termis is far too addictive to leave below 6k rpm!!!:Kiss:

  7. When I did my last naughty boys school,(speed awareness course),the guy asked us to write down why we speed.
He had a right old pop at me because I said I did it because I like going fast....he actually said,"you can't write that"....
I've never had any rider training, but I do have a lifetime of experience.
So a few weeks ago,I did the local Bikesafe thing,(my nephew said it was worthwhile)
There was thick fog over a lot of the County, and they called to ask if I could get there early,as no one else had turned up.
Prior to the ride-out I had an an animated discussion with a Police Sergeant and others about the helmet law: not one of them had ever ridden without a helmet, and had absolutely no idea of how much your faculties are limited by wearing one.As far as the Sarge was concerned, there is no such thing as personal freedom-you are being told to wear a helmet,so wear a helmet.
The only justification for the Law was the possible cost of treating accident victims. He wouldn't comment on the fact that cyclists/horse riders/Sikhs/trike riders are not compelled to wear a helmet.
On the ride-out,I couldn't relax when the Police bike was following so stuck to the speed limits,at one point he gesticulated to get a move on.
He was very relaxed about speeding on A roads,as long as you were careful and chose the time and place, and most importantly, didn't endanger anyone else. But he was absolutely strict about 30 and 40 mph limits.
He gave me a good write-up at the end, said I was," safe enough to take his kids on the pillion",which was how he measures riding ability.A top bloke, lived in the real world, didn't pontificate or preach, just straightforward advice and comment.
Speed limits/helmet wearing etc are Laws, but some of those who decide the limits/enforce the Laws are blinded by their own opinion/training/self-importance,and cannot even consider that a Law is wrong/should be modified/should be removed completely.
This attitude of "mother-knows-best",is what makes some of the general population so dismissive of Politicians and Law enforcement.
In France,Police bikers ride in shirt sleeves/jodhpurs:in the UK,I would not have been allowed to do the Bikesafe thing if I was similarly dressed.....

  8. So what have you done about changing/modifying the law re wearing a helmet?

Whenever you go out on a motorbike do you comply and wear a helmet or do you go with your beliefs and flout the law as a freedom fighter?

    just asking like....

  9. It was the same when I did a Rapid training course. My instructor (ex-police) said he'd be riding to keep his licence as he needed it tomorrow, what we did was up to us. We also stuck rigidly to 30's and 40's. One thing's for sure: no matter how fast you think you are, if you've got one of those blokes behind you, you won't shake them off. And yes, they're all track riders as well.
On a complete side issue, I did my course in the pouring rain. It was virtually a brand new bike and I'd never have ridden it in the wet otherwise, but I came away firmly convinced of the value of wet-weather riding to improve speed and smoothness. And there's the issue: speed alone isn't lethal, bad riding is. And you can ride badly, and lethally, just as easily at legal speeds as license busting ones.

  10. When I was very young and foolish I was known to ride home late at night without a lid on occasions just for the blast. I can tell those who haven't tried it that above 50mph any sensory advantage to going lidless disappears. You are deafened, blinded and blast frozen. You're aware of nothing but the shape of hedges flying past and a blurred, refracted vanishing point as if you're viewing the world through a frosted window. And if you keep it up for 5 miles or more you become anaesthetised and start to switch off. But you do hear all sorts of hideous rattles from you bike which you'd never noticed before.

  11. I thought you were more an orange in the pocket sort of man......o_O

  12. I like the idea of riding without a helmet as it would make eating fruit etc on the go so much easier.
Trying to eat a Golden Delicious through a full face is a PITA.
BTW has anyone tried eating peanuts on a bike?
Not recommended; when you flick them up into the air and try and catch them in your mouth they either go flying back in the slipstream. or you're thrown off balance while trying to maneuver your head into optimum catching position.

  13. your confusing it with a banana.

  14. In any kind of case, civil or criminal, one side submits evidence and tries to persuade the court that it is admissible, relevant, reliable, and truthful. The other side tries to argue that it is inadmissible, irrelevant, unreliable, and/or untruthful. Then the court decides what it believes and how much weight to give it. Courts continually decide what to accept and what to reject - indeed, that is the main function of courts.

  15. I rode without a helmet many times before it became compulsory. On a warm Summer's day poodling gently bareheaded is delightful; you can see and hear very much better. If it's cold or wet, or at speed, you really need headwear of some sort, and goggles or a visor.

The argument about whether people are well-advised to wear helmets is completely separate from the argument about whether they should be compulsory by law. If you want to argue that something (anything) should be compulsory, merely saying it is a good thing is not enough - there needs to be a specific justification for compulsion as such.

  16. without messes up my hair more than with.....plus the chicks dig me taking off my helmet to see my purdee face

  17. I went on all the anti-compulsion rallies I could,at the time...I was 16 at the time, and there were thousands in Trafalgar Square...try that now,and you'd be arrested...
I was a MAG member for a long time
But I also live in a democratic country with an ("elected"....) Government where, rightly or wrongly,Government has decided I must wear a crash helmet when I ride a motorcycle, and that if I do not they will charge me a good deal of money, and potentially imprison me if I continue to thumb my nose at them by not wearing one.
However, this imposition is small beer compared to the many other restrictions on my freedom that successive Governments have imposed on me.
For example, the Law prohibits me from having a cigarette within the confines of my truck cab, which they.consider a workplace...they did not take account of the fact that when working away,it is also my home....
There are many, many more examples of the restriction of freedom in this Country, freedom that we once had,and has been taken away under the guise of Security or somesuch...
Only those of us of a certain age remember those freedoms, and no doubt Governments and Politicians everywhere are desperate for us old fuckers to die off,and leave only those who have been brainwashed into thinking that Hi-Vis and a £650 helmet will save you from death.(They won't,because you're going to die at some point, everyone does...)
It's all bollocks, spouted by twats...Politicians know it,and anyone with half an educated brain knows it,but nobody can do anything about it.
So in answer to your last question,I wear a helmet because there is an army of Citizens-In-Uniform hired by the Government to make sure I do....

  18. And a large proportion of them are pillocks: goes with the territory of giving some one full or their own self importance a job where they feel are given the right to feel superior - fuking idiots a lot of them, worse than a jumped up traffic warden by far. There are fewer decent people in percentage terms that wear that particular uniform I'm afraid. Andy will know this, but only if he is not one of them ;)

  19. You're all on a hiding to nothing, speeding is a revenue earner, and all the time it is the clamps will stay tight. So make up your own rules, any decent copper can see at a glance who is a danger and who isn't. And anyone who uses the term 'safety camera' needs a kick up the cu..

  20. I always wore goggles (or sunglasses at the very least....),and I would wear a helmet if it was cold,no issue.
But there is nothing like it..for those who've never experienced it,it's exciting, exhilarating and friggin scary at speed....try it,you'll love it....
