Would they have had to deliberately crash test them to find out (and then found out that they got paralysed with the rubbish ones)?
Several times over the years, Forcefield have won it the last few times http://www.forcefieldbodyarmour.com/img/products/reviews/Ride_June_2008_Best_Buy_Back_Protector.pdf http://www.forcefieldbodyarmour.com/img/products/reviews/Bike%20Review1.jpg http://www.forcefieldbodyarmour.com/img/products/reviews/Ride_Sep12.jpg http://www.forcefieldbodyarmour.com/img/products/reviews/Superbike_ProL2K_March12_3.jpg http://www.forcefieldbodyarmour.com/img/products/reviews/Ride_September11_ProL2K.jpg http://www.forcefieldbodyarmour.com/img/products/reviews/FastBikes_EssentialKitGuide_Mar12.jpg
I'm sure they test them that way just like they test lids, leathers and gloves in the same way.
+1 on the forcefield. it moulds to the contours of your spine, and after 20 minutes you dont really know its there. I had an off whilst wearing it too several years ago with no issues. Back protectors take a while to get used to i found, but on the reare occassions when i ride, i feel vulnerable without it. Forcefield also make a chest protector which i think would be my next purchase. I cant recommend the forcefield highly enough.
I use a Knox Aegis back protector every time i ride, don't even realise I've got it on when I'm riding. think it cost around £80. Was comfortable from the off, articulated and follows your shape / position. Wouldn't ride without it and really don't feel it there at all.
