Ban On New Petrol And Diesel Cars In Uk From 2030

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by El Toro, Nov 18, 2020.

  1. Yes, the battery will slowly discharge so I guess you'll need a type of maintenance charge. Plus they wont fair so well in the depths of winter. Plus anyone who owns a laptop will know that the battery gets a bit tired after 2 years or so.

Pence per mile is probably attractive in favour of the EV. For now. Because that's where 'the reset' want us to go. Wait until they start bumming everyone on tax for every charge. It won't be so cheap then.

Remember when they (the government) told us diesel was the best thing since sliced bread? Running a diesel car was much cheaper, helped by tax breaks for diesel at the pump. But now they tell us diesel's the anti Christ of all fuels.

  2. I will get around paying tax on electricity for charging the new car.
I will get a diesel generator.

  3. There must be a way to figure cost. My electric at home is X pence. It takes Y amount of electric to charge my EV from 0 to full. A full charge goes Z miles. Therefore I can work out the pence per mile charging at home.

I mean, I can't, I'm way to lazy and not sober yet but someone could.

  5. As of June 2020 there were 38.4 million vehicles registered in the UK
IF they all overnight became electric the UK would need another 4 nuclear power stations immediately!

  6. The numbers are out there on the web, yes, pence per mile is cheap but the initial cost of the car isn't, yes maintenance costs are cheaper but battery life is finite and replacement will be expensive. I think right now if you can afford the initial outlay it will be cheaper to run, however, if you can afford the initial outlay you won't be bothered about running costs - bit like a super yacht :D
As Mary said, when there is a critical mass of EV owners watch the stealth taxes ramp up - why the big push for smart meters is a question :bucktooth:

  7. It still misses the bigger problem. If vehicle ownership continues to grow as it has done over the last decade, we wont be going anywhere quickly in any of them.

This article was written a year ago but point 5 is the most pertinent. Money drives most things and money will drive down car ownership to be replaced by something else.

  9. Ha, if only it was that simple..... :upyeah:

  10. There are calculators.

Another unknown will be how do they tax car users but not those without cars when it comes to energy. When they stick 60% tax on electric, how will those who barely afford to heat and eat now afford it? How will that work?

  11. Maybe they will just track the miles and put a pence per mile tax on?

We drive about once a fortnight in my house and mainly it's 200 odd miles when we do so electric is going to be shit for me.

  12. i've wondered how they would cope in places like mine, cold dark wet winters with longer commutes if you live in rural areas then i read Norways electric car sales are now at over 60% of all new purchases.
The next problem? Once you introduce more charging points, and then standardise all of them, the grid that powers them isn’t ready.
The UK’s National Grid currently has enough energy in its system to support a nation full of EVs, no matter what time of year. What’s lacking is the ability to charge them all simultaneously, which would be a problem if drivers charged their vehicles at the same time in the evening.

  13. They want us to charge overnight when the TVs and kettle is off

  14. They are talking road toll charging for all miles travelled. So nice little gps in your car 24/7 unable to be disabled and meaning you get a daily/weekly/monthly bill probably deducted directly from salary like the student tax

  15. Sounds like ‘they’ will know your every move. The brave new world awaits.
