Mine is of a similar age, and I've just gone over the 12k mark yesterday. It's booked in for its Desmo next week and I cannot wait to put another 12k miles on it... Unless you're buying it as an object of investment I don't really understand owning it... and not wanting to ride it ? People are funny eh ?
I think I understand them, I just don’t 100% agree with them. If you want to make an investment, anything that moves, floats, or flies, is not a good investment vehicle (pun not intended). The best you usually achieve is a hold of value, but that return is eroded by costs, such as insurance etc. The only side benefit of owning an “investment” like a nice bike, car, yacht, light aircraft, is that you get to enjoy it while holding it. So go ride the damn bike.
I have a 2000 996 SPS and love to look at it in the garage, but I also love to ride the bike. I was luckily to take her to the Ducati Silverstone trackday, as this is what the bike was designed for. I find it funny people saying “Baron (Chris)included” that I would not take such a bike on track, well guess what you don’t have the ride it to absolute limit of the bike or your own skill. The Ducati trackday was excellent and people are respectful and you get to really enjoy the bike even better than on the roads. I say everyone is entitled to enjoy their pride and joy as there is fit, but I love to ride my SPS and not care about the mileage.
fair play to you for riding it, but as you elude to there is a big difference between a Ducati track day and the average NoLimits day where you have the odd clown on a bike that’s dripping oil and it’s some sort of badge of honour. I was at Snetterton early this year when I guy blew up an R1 and thought it was hilarious that it coated the track in oil
I’m a few miles short of 20k on my 1098. If that was a 2007 car that would be nothing. That said I know if I chose to sell it the mileage would cheapen it or make it undesirable to many. Here’s to the next 20k. And probably in my ownership.
my sps is coming up to 24000 miles now, i must admit i dont track it now after a bit of a scare at silverstone
My shitter 996 BIP in track fairings. I had no qualms about tracking that but I never took my 17000 mile 748r in track. Risk vs reward. I loved the 748 too much
As I mentioned at the start of the thread 'The Baron' immediately marked himself out (to me) as an A1 chump with him saying 916s, 748s & 996s were old school Ducatis..... Just one of these knobs jumping onto whatever they believe is fashionable and think will give them cred when they incorrectly talk bollocks about it. And really the whole thing is just been used as a prop to inflate his online presence and hopefully give validity to his tissue thin credibility. The empty can rattles the most. Rant over... and breathe...
Just having the bike rebuilt , I was on a ducati day , just entering the complex at Silverstone the back end let go on the left hander , don't sound much but it was enough for the brown adrenaline to come out
No pictures unfortunately, old rods are in the garage somewhere. First one was at Knockhill reverse circuit coming into the first (last) corner. Bit of a rattle and that was it. Found out the rod bolts were loose engine had had previously been done at a ducati specialist.... Next one was at the end of Almería straight, probably a bit of overrevving. Crank been metal sprayed and lightened balanced to suit RS rods and now revs quite nicely No doubt it will go bang again at sometime in the future
Mine is tucked up and will probably be sorned til spring unless the sun shines this weekend. Not done many miles in the last few years and never been on track (unless you count The Mountain Road from Ramsey to Douglas) but I stll love a sunny day blast. Bought in April 2004 with just under 10,000 on the clock.
I must be one of them there funny ones then. Bought mine 12 years ago, cos I wanted one. Rode it for a bit, now just lost the love for motorcycles that I once had. So it rarely moves out of the garage now. Constantly think of selling it, but cling onto the fact that one day I will move house into the countryside and rediscover my love of motorcycles. Genuinely would be gutted if I sold it and watched some other bugger ride off on it, but equally have no intention of riding it whilst I live where I do.
What do you have? I think from time to time people fall in and out of love with bike for various reasons. Traffic mainly for me. And when that’s thinner, speed cameras!
Used to make an effort and go to a nice cafe once a week, but then introduced 50 limits on the roads which is just painfully slow. Then my motorcycling pal moved away. I've got a 998 and a ZX7R in the garage. Like I said, hoping to move to the countryside in a couple of years so perhaps I might use em then.
