Beam Me Up Sweaty!

  2. If you launch eastwards (as you usually do), at the equator you get well over 1,000 mph added to your speed for free. The further from the equator, the more of that you lose. At the N&S poles you would get no free speed at all. For launching satellites into polar orbits it would not matter, but a large proportion of satellites are for equatorial orbits (including all the geostationaries, obviously).
