  3. No it isn't. However the fact that the program can be made at all indicates that something is not right. I used to think that a few people taking advantage of the system indicated that it was working for those who genuinely needed it; but now I am not so sure, welfare has progressed beyond being a safety net into the realms of a lifestyle choice, and that has to be a bad thing.

  4. Bring back national service, at 18 chuck them in the army teach discipline and how to fend for yourself and a bit of self pride hopefully.

  5. Must try harder :)

  6. There are about 60 million people in the UK. A programme maker can easily find half a dozen examples of individual people to demonstrate virtually anything. The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'evidence'.

  7. Exactly!

My own view is that I count myself lucky to have intelligence. Lucky to have had opportunities and family to help. Lucky to gave had good physical and mental health. Yes, I have worked hard, but along the way I met many people who have not had the same chance in life.

The largest recipient group of benefits are pensioners. Many have two homes!

Then we have those who work but whose employers feel their efforts are not worth paying enough money to live on.

Unemployment benefit is a hill of beans in comparison to both the above.

If you want to get angry with someone, try the bankers etc who are robbing us blind.

  8. True, but should those half dozen people not be held to account ?

Do you think the benefits paid to the unemployed should be in the form of a safety net providing only basic needs ?

Has the benefit system gone beyond providing a safety net ?

  9. Say we just pay the safety net so they can exist, they will just go out and mug people to get more money to buy what they want or steal what they want bit of a catch 22 really.
The other problem is a person of 50 is made redundant has less than 2 years service at last job so really doesn't qualify for a huge payout so they have to sign on, because of there age no one wants to employ them, is it right that they only get paid an existence after working all their life and paying their dues ?
I am a great believer in one rule serves all but is that really right.

  10. I love watching programs like that on my TV, for which I do not have a TV Licence. It reminds me of why I left the UK to come and live in France 11 years ago. It seems that I can see how the UK is going to the dogs, I know because I watched Benefits Britain, Eastenders, Jeremy Kyle, "Can't pay we'll take it away" and Crimewatch. Things have really changed over the last years.
I have to say a big thank you to those who still work and pay tax in the UK as it keeps my RAF pension rolling into my French bank account every month and allows me to put fuel in the bikes, that have no road tax, and go out 7 days a week if I want.
If anyone is down this way on their bikes any time then let me know and I'll share a bottle of very expensive (at UK prices) wine with you.

  11. Look, when are you going to make your mind up about moving to France?
Was it a good choice to move there or wasn't it? Get off the damned fence!

  12. Least you can do, as we are paying for it ;)

  13. Nice having your nose rubbed in it eh

  14. Well I'm still here after 11 years and I hardly ever go back to the UK even for a break - too many speed cameras and it costs to park over there. Was it a good choice to move? Well I moved when I was 45 and have not had to work since. I did miss English tea, but visitors bring me boxes of PG tips when they come out now.
I am trying to think of something good that I remember, oh yes the Queen paid me to play with aircraft all day long, which I would have done for free as it was good fun.

  15. Think I'd better go to bed. ;-)

  16. People are the products of their environment.

  17. So link the benefits received with the contributions made. A safety net for those who have contributed nothing and enhanced benefits for those who have.

And put the savings into the police ;)

  18. Now that is a very good idea linking the benefits. Have you thought about running for prime minister.
Start your own party The Biker Party. Slogan could be " we will ensure fair treatment for everyone even if you only drive a car" :) but all joking aside I am surprised that the government have not thought of that. It would save them billions and it would create jobs to. Few more prisons will need building and then need to be staffed more coppers needed to catch the influx of new criminals it's a win win
