Best Quality Carbon Fibre Products ?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Staffie, May 22, 2015.

  1. CDT-r is/was there original name. They re-branded themselves as "Fullsix" but are now part of the CDT group. Moto Rapido use their products exclusively on their BSB Panigale.

  2. Don't mean to be picky but this is not entirely correct. Carbon fibre's strength is not determined by the level of lacquer on it or how much resin has been forced out of it, but by the moulding process and type of carbon fibre used and how it is laid in the mould. The reason it is matte is because it has not been clear coated.

Discarding cheap wet lay products for the moment, pre-preg carbon is as the name suggests pre-impregnated carbon fibre matting. When applied to a mould and this then placed in a vacuum bag and then an autoclave, the impregnated resin is forced under intense atmospheric pressure to fill any voids in the carbon fibre structure/weave of the matting. As it does so it cures and causes the fibre to set in whatever shape is required. It is this process that gives the part it's phenomenal strength. When the part is removed from the mould it is matte. If you require a gloss finish it is simply clear coated after any sanding or machining that is required has been carried out to remove any imperfections/ cut out any apertures/holes, after the part is released from the mould.

Cheap wet lay parts are made using a combination of thin carbon matting sandwiched around GRP. Might look presentable enough, but it's heavier and less well defined than pre-preg parts. Ultimately it depends on how fussy you are and your budget.

  3. You are right, I didn't explain that well...what I meant is that company's build up the thickness using excess resin, autoclave only fills voids but you should not have any voids to start with hence compressed building, but that costs millions. Although the less resin you use the stronger as resin only holds fibres in place and fibres at certain angles and counters provide strength...Airbus manufacture using zero agents under compression. As you say it's all how it's laid and in the process of manufacturing. I wouldn't buy a stress related part or a protection part unless it has unidirectional and even Kevlar in the core. But for huggers, fenders, tank pads, etc then it ain't too much of an issue.

I used to work for Boeing on 787 before moving to Airbus Industries working on the wings structural integrity, the use of carbon is phenomenal...but for us mortals then I would just go for the best finish. Interesting stuff if you are in to that kind of stuff!

  4. Pretty sure Airbus knows a thing or two about carbon fibre, as you do with your experience. The sad thing is many people don't and there are so many options out there for aftermarket parts, many of which are really poorly made or that use cheap materials. Sometimes the allure is greater than the value of a product, so it's easy for someone to buy with their heart rather than with their head. As mentioned, I have yet to see any manufacturer come close to Lieb Speed in Germany. His parts are meticulously made. He only produces in small volumes, but what he does make is exquisite. What a lot of people don't appreciate is whilst many companies claim to manufacture carbon fibre parts, they don't actually produce any themselves, a good example being Ilmberger, who out-source many parts they subsequently put their name to.

  5. Agree entirely...it works me up when people buy carbon and the company they buy it from claims it's the best ever. Lieb Speed is quality stuff as you say. Maybe Airbus can make a few fenders for us!

  6. I was lucky enough to stumble across a brand new genuine Ducati Performance rear hugger for my 749 but compared to the front mudguard I got from carbonmoto in Sheffield there quality is outstanding and much better than OE I my opinion.

  9. Thanks again for the advice. Two more quick questions :

    2. If I go for Lieb Speed from Conquest Carbon do I just phone up to get the discount ?

    Cheers

If you already have gloss carbon then keep it the same. My KTMRC8 had all satin and looked good, but keep it the same I would say. Give Conquest a call and tell them this forum has recommended their products.

  13. Fullsix don't import any of their products instead they are the manufactures. They also make many OEM parts for BMW and a lot of their products are used in BSB & WSB. They are also the only manufacture who have developed the Monocoque tank and subframe I.e a product from one single piece of carbon fibre. Here is there promo vid.....
