Bike Or Helmet 'action Cameras' - Advice Needed

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Denzil the Ducati, May 17, 2017.

  1. Using the Olfi daily on both bikes and in the car and I am gathering an unintended record of cars jumping red lights, overtaking in stupid or illegal areas or going the wrong way on one way streets, got two red light jumpers in the last week. The picture quality is good enough to be able to easily read number plates. When you play the journeys back you can really see how sh!t some drivers are. Another funny thing is the number of people who stop and stare as you drive by on the 748 or 999, this does not happen in our Fiesta - which is no surprise.

  2. Having tried the Apeman, and hats off to the customer service for trying very hard to sort things for me, it just didn't work mechanically so I will give the Olfi a go.

  3. Olfi is good. No issues whatsoever with mine.

  4. Only issue I have is dodgy USB lead, although it may be the computer usb socket. Get about 1.5 hours record time on its battery, I bought a Sandisc Extreme Plus 64GB micro card (Argos) for it which is good enough to record more than the battery can support. Picture quality is better when the mount is firm (even though the camera has a gyro stabiliser) and when the sun is out it is remarkably good quality. Just need to come up with a switched 5v supply off the bike(s) and car to save having to charge it every night.

  5. Funny you should mention the stabilisation and the mount. Wasn't happy with my existing mount, very shaky on rough roads as it was clipped to the screen and the screen shook.

Just rejigged it all and bolted it to the main bike where the base of the screen mounts. Not moving a bit. image.jpg

  6. I have the GoPro suction mount, I could hang off of it it's that good. As an alternative the 3m sticky mounts from GoPro are super strong, had to use cutaway system on my helmet when skydiving as they were a bit of a snag hazard on deployment, the bracket would snap before the sticky pad came off!

  7. £34! That's good for that money. Can it be set to auto start recording when it gets power?

Looking for something cheap to stick on the rear for commuting, and something I can fit and forget (A while ago I got nudged from behind by a creeper in traffic. I look behind and he's now stopped, but staring off to the side. Move forward a foot, to give the numpty some room and he does it again. Still staring off into the distance, creeping his car forwards. He got the wrath).

  8. Not sure mate, you thinking of attaching to a switched live?

  9. Yep. Got that side of things well covered dual USB ports up front and a power distribution module under the seat ready for more electrickery.

  10. Plugs.jpg ?

  11. It is not all about having a decent camera it is also about being able to edit the footage, and that can make more difference than video quality.
For example: I looked at the video above from the cheap £35 camera to see what the quality was like in comparison to my Gopros. I have an open mind so was expecting a decent video quality. Trouble is that due to lack of editing I switched it off at the 2 minute point as nothing had happened. Now with a little editing that first 2 minutes of waiting for something to happen could have been cut out and far better result could be achieved. I never got to see the video quality on a fast moving bike.

  13. I'd be amazed if it wasn't editable, it's just a .mov file. You know on YouTube you can click on the bar at the bottom and jump a few minutes?

  14. You probably can do that if you are not watching in 1080 and have a mega fast internet, but when you start watching you don't know how long it is going to be waiting for.
Mine was not a criticism but more of an observation.

  15. yeah, that's the one I tried, just couldn't get it to stay upright on the pushbike while in the waterproof case. customer service showed a way of making sure it didn't slip, but that was without the waterproof case (which I need as I cycle to work in the NW of England where rain happens now and again). seemed a decent enough camera, and at the price very much a bargain.

  16. Sounds like a faulty case to me.

  17. Well i went down the back straight at Bedford with it in the waterproof case at 160mph and it didn't move. Maybe you need stronger fingers?
