Enjoy Oz dude.... always make big decisions when you aren't stressed (if you can)... Please keep us informed...
Ha ha - it’s one of the few things that stuck I my head as it was covered over and over again in different A level’s and degree modules! I like it though - simple if flawed - but for the vast majority of us contains a lot of truth! We don’t generally think about food if we can’t breathe! And if I need a piss I can’t think of anything beyond that! Apply that same logic up the chain with some exceptions and you have something that works - unless you are dealing with bonkers people (technical term) then all bets are off!
So I had an initial phone interview yesterday, and then a call today to book me in for a face to face interview for a job down in Portsmouth. It won't pay enough so even if it goes well I don't think I'll take it but will be good experience t get back into the swing of things. I've not had a proper interview since my apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce 16 years ago! Still not really made much inroad into a decision...
Went to the interview on Friday last week, and been offered the job today. I was right, the pay isn't enough (60% paycut!) and I don't think it will suit me going to a big company (BAE systems). I don't think there will be enough day to day variance so will get bored. It's also a big step back from my current position and decision making abilities so don't think it's the right choice this time round. Has made me appreciate my current job a lot more though, it's a really good fit for me and what I want to do, just a shame I can't move it to a different city and have a change of scenery! Big boost to know that I've got some desirable skills and attitude though, doing something right! The hunt for a decision goes on......!
I love being my own boss or as I call it "having loads of bosses, tax man, vat man, customers, suppliers and swmbo ". Having your own company is a bit like having a big dog that always wants attention. Can't leave it in kennels or with someone and can't take it very far away with you.
Edit: fat thumb syndrome I meant to touch the ‘agree’ icon but I’ve a big dog that nudged my phone seeming attention at the same time.
Had a phonecall from the recruiter at BAE today asking if the interviewing manager can call me up and speak to me directly, looks like they're desperate! Will see what they say tomorrow.
My 2 cents... feel free to ignore.. I agree on the Job - if it did not feel right at the interview... it will probably be wrong and worse in reality. If they are that far off salary wise.. then also they are not going to give you the rise you would need to move and make it worth the risk... probably a more expensive area too... reading between the lines.. your looking to talk with them so that you feel valued and wanted.. Buy a big dog... much cheaper and more rewarding... I am an Engineer - look after lots of plants around the world.. but even that is boring after 20 years.. As for the marriage thing.... apart from having kids... its cheaper and probably more fun being single until your in your 50's... and looking for companionship when you think to retire... I have lived for work for 20 + years... and work between 60 and 90 hours a week ... on occasion 120 hours a week.. I have a well paid salaried job.. so see no direct benefit for working the hours.. I travel all over the world... constantly... and have done for 20 years... on the weekend I generally now just go for a drive... rather than the site seeing... to pass the time.. whetehr in UK or USA or Europe.. I hate cities.... all over the world... I have seen a few of the 7 wonders of the world... and not been impressed by them.. Great Wall... yes its a wall. Taj mahal.. yes its a Marble Temple.. badly maintained in a shity area with lots of beggers Niagra Falls - not that big and in the middle of a town... It could be i am just a miserable C##t.... If I had my time over - I would not do the same again... I have been putting as much into my pension as possible the last 10 years... so that I can retire at 55 to 57... when the house is paid... then would have enough to live off until around 80 probably without touching the capital... for most part. I would however want a job... just a small job to keep busy... Maybe a burger van or similar... I love Animals... so ideally need to think of something I could do around that.... Anyway... from all of that... Money is not everything... travel is not everything... work is not everything.... try to plan your life on what you like... your hobbies... and retire as soon as you can to enjoy the time you have and your hobbies... You need to figure out what YOU want out of life... then go for that...
Aye good advice there and a decent perspective. Didn’t hear from them today, but you’re probably right that it’s just a nice confidence boost for someone trying to employ you! I have enjoyed my job a bit more since realising it’s a good fit for me, bonus in a couple of months so will see.
