That song was the bane of my life. I worked in a greengrocers in Bexley heath directly opposite the clocktower when I was a 16-17yr old Mod. Where all the fucking skins hung out (The clocktower, no not the grocer they werent vegans). God how I managed to survive I'll never know. I fucking detest the exploited. Racist cunts.
IIRC, the BNP HQ used to be in Bexley or nearby, as we used to drive past it on the way to visiting my ex-wife's parents who lived in the area. It's probably no coincidence that when we were sitting in the garden one day with our then toddler-aged son that a person or persons unknown in the street started throwing half-brick sized rocks and clods of earth over the hedge, which only narrowly missed him. Her parents (who were black) also had their windows put through a couple of times, plus the occasional abusive note and a fair amount of general anti-social behaviour was directed at them and the house. Plus of course, Stephen Lawrence was murdered in that part of the world too.
I know, I used to walk past that too. Twas on Upper Wickam Lane more towards Welling. I took many a turd on their doorstep as it was dark and handy. Also nearby was Dansen Park Youth club where they all hung out. I got caught there one day and got beat up by at least 20 skins. Just because I was a mod. Stephen was murdered not far from where I lived (woolwich) and strangely we were shopping that night at that time and had turnt off well hall rd a half mile or so before it. I also, ffs strangely enough, used to live in the 22 storey tower block right next to where that poor soldier was beheaded. (used to take scoot up lift to 10th) So the message here is, dont move near me.
I’m not sure The Exploited could be described as being racist’s at least at no concert I ever saw them at did they project any kind of racism. Unfortunately the youth culture that was Skinheads and Punks had been appropriated by very unsavoury characters.
Blimey. I grew up around there and lived in a block on Frances Street, just down from the barracks. Luckily I moved out of London in the early 80s. It really was/is a shite area.
Of course the BNP HQ is now No10 Downing St as the post 2016 iteration of the Tories more or less stole their policies wholesale!
I may be being harsh on exploited. Im only expressing how i feel about them by association probably. They caused me no end of grief just coz a shit song.
Proper skins, 2 tone skins n rude boys trojan skins etc you could sort out from the nazi ones easy enough. Mostly. Never understood nazi punks either. Both are antithesis in origin. Nazis just ruin everything. Miserable shits.
The only skinheads I ever met were the National Front type, always seemed to be real bone heads. A lot of Punk concerts attempted to refuse skinheads entrance but in never worked in the end as there’d be too many outside. Then they’d come storming in and cause mayhem......
The proper skins were always smarter dressed usually. Nf skins thought boots n braces made you a skinhead. They never got the subtlety.
I think I'll stick to a coffee and piece of cake and mooch round Sammy Miller's. I am most definitely not cool and one of the plus points of the pandemic is I've not had to go to London for over a year
I've always thought the haircut, braces and violence were the skins traits, and the boots were mainly a weapon. Scum.
Proper skins emerged from suedeheads who in turn emerged from mod. It was about the music and the clothes and it was inclusive because the music was ska. It was 2 tone before 2 tone emerged later on. The nf skins just took the image because theyre thick shallow angry morons.
