Brake upgrade...?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Nelson, Apr 10, 2012.

  1. Howdo!!
Upgraded the front end on me Superlight with1098 forks and 4 pad radial calipers (19x18 Brembo master cylinder) tried the SBS Dual Carbon and are really good once up to Temp, however for road riding a bit pants (You never maintain the heat required) so went for the SBS RS and they are spot on! Even fitted em to the GSXR.

  2. You chaps that added 1098/848 forks/calipers.
Did you have issues with speedo drives?
    Add spacers? New discs?
I'm warming to this idea now, it's as cost effective buying some 848 forks and non mono calipers as buying forks/radial bottoms and P4s buy the looks of things.

  3.

  4. I'm not using the speedo drive as I have a Translogic dash (picks up from a sensor on rear wheel) but you could use the speedo drive with your existing wheel (the wheel has the cutout for the drive), you do need to use 15mm offset discs though. If you use a 1098 wheel then the 848/1098 discs are fine but the speedo drive won't fit, the discs are not interchangeable between 916/1098 series due to the mounting holes (6 vs 5).

You know it makes sense...

  5. And I know someone who has some standard 848 brakes for sale ;-)

  6. I want to keep the original wheel and peedo drive.
Soooooooooooo I need 748 discs with a 15mm off set with 5 holes? Is that correct?

  7. Put her old scabby fairings on today for her MOT.
Failed on a couple of stupid things.
Headlight too low and clip ons not uniform...Grrrrrr....!!!

Lot's of little things to do while I wait for the 996R style fairings to arrive.

She is an old slag with the heart of a lion....

  8. Clipons not uniform? I'm not sure that is grounds for failure. Provided there's nothing loose or deteriorated, and no restriction of movement I can't see what the problem is.

  9. I was a little surprised. The gap between the clip on and fairing isn't uniform, when turned left to right, if you follow?

  10. What twat would fail the bike just because the gap on one side was bigger than the other side. Did you just loosen the bolts and move them the same and quickly adjust the headlight or are you having to take it back ?

For the dash you need one of these, really easy to do ( well it was after someone else helped me with a diagram !! ) and it is the clearest dash I have ever used on any bike.

  11. "I couldn't POSSIBLY have been going that fast occifer, she's 'only' a 748...."

  12.
  13. Translogic, got it for £150 off eBay then made the carbon mounting plate with a square of carbon from somewhere Stockton/Darlington way, I think ! (Anth may know)

The gear indicator is really precise and the only fiddly bit was cutting up the original loom but nothing major.

You can adjust the mileage as well so it reads the same as original or you can reset it to zero.

Does it feel silly quick then and what does it sound like with the 748 exhausts ?

  14. TBH I've not spanked her yet as she's not 100% legal yet, no MOT, so didn't venture far. Doesn't s feel instantly quicker than my evo, but defo more power/torque lucking below. I geared her down a bit as well, which I may change.

The front suspension needs sorting as she feels far too tippy at the mo. The previous owner has set the fork tops about level with the top yoke!
    I'm no expert, but I don't think that's right!

She sounds fine, that's a butchered 848 exhaust.

  15. mate you need to set up your ride height static sag and then comp /rebound.............try dropping the yokes down the fork so you have 10mm poking through or 186m from the bottom of the fork outer to under the bottom yoke. You need a rear ride height tool to set the rear up to around 235 240 with the rear unloaded. then start to set the sag up front 20- 25mm from unloaded to bike alone. and 10 -15mm same on rear unloaded to bike on its own

  16. oh and a digitek falcon dash...........................pure class!

  17. Cheers Andy... I've started to look at sorting all that.
Thanks for the measurements, very useful.

    I like clocks...

  18. I do, and my thoughts mirror Ian's...what a f*cking moron.

I'd be having a little *chat* when I went back...had to do this for my mate's car last month. Of the five items it failed for, one was justified, one was marginal. The others were total crap - it got failed for ABS warning light not illuminating and a broken ABS sensor cable. The car doesn't have ABS.

The words "I think I may have to contact VOSA regarding this" seemed to cause significant concern

  19. You need 15mm offset discs with 6 holes, the 5 hole discs are for 848/1198 wheels. 748R and 998R had them as standard but they may not be too easy to find a new set at a good price, I have Brembo HPK discs in the correct offset.
