There are very good reasons why you might not want to make imports zero tariffs though. Let’s say the UK Govt decides it wants to implement a zero tariff on cars. That means every country in the world can import vehicles to the UK with zero tariffs. It does not have to be reciprocated by those Countries though. JLR looks at this and thinks it’s pointless producing cars in the UK for export as they are subject to 10% tariff. So they build a factory in, let’s say Spain and China. They can also see that they can export cars to the UK with zero tariffs. So why would they want a factory in the UK?
No one ever said anything to the contrary - people are commenting from project fear snippets instead of thinking for themselves - JLR have opened a factory in China, and have opened one in Nitra instead of Spain. Neither are going well currently - the automotive argument cannot be spun in the EU's favor as they will be hit massively if they are intent on bullying the UK for leaving.
i think that your referring to the resent vote where england went into melt down. different reff bud. the only thing similar between the two was the approach taken by the uk gov.
It certainly does not work in the UKs favour though either. Dairy products and many foods are subject to very high tariffs under WTO rules. To allow zero import tariffs on those would have a significant negative impact on farming in the UK. The zero tariffs argument is very weak in nearly every aspect which is why Nations like to make trade agreements.
You keep making flippant comments - it stupid to do so when you know jack shit - look at all your rantings on the old Brexit thread pre-vote, that didn't bare any resemblance to anything that actually happened - your 'form' is a great big pile of crap. A project fear employee through and through don't worry, if France is not on the cards then you still have Cornwall
If the factory was in the UK was building cars for the UK they wouldn't be exported anywhere so no tariff. By your statement above you are saying it would be cheaper to build the car in China and export it to the UK than build it in the UK to sell in the UK. Or am I missing something ? This is why I don't get remainers
The JLR Chinese factory has cost millions, the Chinese stopped buying the Evoque when it was no longer manufactured in the UK for their market - they simply bought the Land Wind copy for 3 times less as it was comparable in every way as well as looks
Can't see that at work - blocked link (is it worthy of your master Liz? If so I will view this evening)
Or maybe the UK market isn’t big enough to justify a factory here just for UK sales. Only 40% of the parts on JLR vehicles assembled in the UK are sourced in the UK.
