British Indy: What Happens Now?

Discussion in 'Wasteland' started by Loz, May 23, 2015.

?
  1. Full Brexit with "no EU deal" on the 29th March.

  2. Request Extension to article 50 to allow a general election and new negotiations.

  3. Request Extension to article 50 to allow cross party talks and a new deal to be put to EU.

  4. Request Extension to article 50 to allow a second referendum on 1. Remain in EU or 2. Full Brexit.

  5. Table a motion in parliament to Remain in EU WITHOUT a referendum.

  6. I don't know or I don't care anymore

Results are only viewable after voting.
  1. And this is an argument to stay?

This is a reason to leave.

How can the most energy rich country in Europe be in such bad shape?

If you stop and think and apply your hard Brexit arguments to Scotland then Scotland would have no debt.

It would leave, re join the EU and have a hard border with England.

Hard brexiteers are invariably unionists and your arguments about the EU border are the exact opposite of what they stated about Scotland going Independent. All
The talk of a hard border and lorry checks. Customs at the border.

    Which is it?

This groups arguments are a joke.

TAKE BACK CONTROL OF OUR BORDERS.....except we won’t in Ireland because we don’t won’t to break a peace treaty and we won’t at Dover, because we dont want to have traffic jams or slow up the trucks. Which is it?

  2. Is that because some are more equal than others?

Why should country A be allowed to trade the same way as country B when country A has its workers working in cheap(poor) conditions and cheap(damaging) environmental conditions? Why? How can those goods be considered equivalent to country B’s? We all share the same planet.

  3. It’s a reason for Scotland to leave the U.K. not the U.K. to leave Europe

Brexiteers arguments to leave the EU are the opposite of those they use when arguing against Scotland being independent

  4. numerous links to gov departments including fraser of allander.
you quote exports but not deficits. as my latest link shoes, we are the only nation within the UK with a trade surplus.
noob rather foolishly pointed out that oil revenues go direct to UK. and produced a rather lovely link to prove it, then, we are allocated a population share, there is a lil trick in the oil figures tho, oil that is pumped direct or by tanker i cant mind which way around it is, is allocated as coming from an "unknown region" and is fully allocated to rUK. there are many lil tricks like this to be found in the GERS and Barrnet formula.
    We have no deficit.

  6. Couldn't you sleep @AirCon ?

Yep, you're right Eire has been a net beneficiary from the EU :) since joining back in the 70's when the UK joined up. Believe it or not it was only in the last few years Eire has been paying more to the EU than it receives. I doubt very much whether an Eirexit referendum would succeed.

On the issue of a 'hard' border, neither NI (UK) or Eire want it and neither want to have to pay for it. Hence questions were asked just yesterday in the Dail, and outside, 'what if it's never implemented?'. The answer appears to be that, in the event of their being no border controls on the island of Ireland, border controls on mainland Europe between Eire and every other EU member would have to be implemented which would have a detrimental effect on Irish exports to other EU members, so that isn't a solution which the Eire Govt are seriously considering in the event of a hard Brexit.

IMO, at present, to use some mixed metaphors, we have a Mexican standoff between the UK and EU. It's like the last 2 poker players in a game where each, having calculated the odds, believe they hold the best hand. The UK's 'ace' is a no-deal hard Brexit because 'that f**ks you EU more than it does me' and the EU's 'ace' is the hard border between NI & Eire because 'that f**ks you UK more than it does me' (causing a breach of the 1998 Belfast Agreement which finally bought peace to this island). To continue the poker analogy we are at the stage where either one player folds and the other takes the pot or they agree to not divulge their hands and split the pot. However, quite what form that quasi-amicable splitting of the pot will take is beyond my vision.

  7. Apparently, Nigel Farage has applied for a German passport - for his kids. Possible because they have a German mother.

  9. I was answering a hypothetical question from a hypothetical member (@Exige) with a hypothetical answer. Nothing in global trade is ever as simple, or cut and dried, as the question suggested.

I agree with you it would be ideal if country A and country B had identical workers and environmental conditions and considerations to make their goods truly equal but unfortunately the way of the world is that they don't. A simple example is the stock that fills up Primark (Penney's here in Ireland) all produced in countries with poor environmental considerations and by workers with extremely low relative rates of pay, yet traded freely.

  11. Still waiting for a remainer to answer :eyes:

  12. So, just to get it straight: Scotland vote to stay in UK, vote again wrong answer, better alone to do their own deals, manage their affairs, manage their own destiny. U.K. vote to leave, vote again, no one can do as good deals as the EU, EU is the future, open borders and relinquishing control is the right price to pay.

No wonder some get confused with what democracy really means. And many seem to be the same people calling both wrong
