British Indy: What Happens Now?

?
  1. Full Brexit with "no EU deal" on the 29th March.

  2. Request Extension to article 50 to allow a general election and new negotiations.

  3. Request Extension to article 50 to allow cross party talks and a new deal to be put to EU.

  4. Request Extension to article 50 to allow a second referendum on 1. Remain in EU or 2. Full Brexit.

  5. Table a motion in parliament to Remain in EU WITHOUT a referendum.

  6. I don't know or I don't care anymore

  1. You know you're in trouble when "a few percent" (by which we'd probably mean one or two, although initially only 0.25% would send a message) is feared as something that would "trigger a recession".

Looked at another way, it would stabilise the currency a bit (the BoE were crazy to reduce the rate a few weeks ago in my view), rightly put a bit more money in the pockets of savers (especially the elderly and those potential first-time-buyers trying to build a deposit) although current mortgage payers (who have had a very easy ride for years) would have to find a little bit more (not that much - with current rates so low the bulk of repayments should be capital rather than interest). Also, by moderating the current insane rate of asset price inflation (especially housing) this would surely help the younger generation. What's not to like?

  2. We need to be careful here to say "people of working age" who are not, genuinely, disabled. But in general this is something the UK has no stomach for though. Apparently 1/2 of the workers on the many building sites in London are from abroad - yet more than 1 million people are unemployed.

  3. Some good points there.

I blame the hangover from cradle to grave socialism, so loved by the left, it has disincentivised the feckless from getting off their arses when all they have to do is sign on once a week (or is it done by smart phone these days ?).

My limited experience of workers from overseas was that they had a good work ethic and on general they were a pleasure to work with.

  4. The Tories never do anything to change it though either. It's a problem that is solved easily by politicians by handing out money as it's so much harder to really get to the route of the issues. Poor education, lack of opportunities, a carrot rather than a stick.

  6. The elephant in the room is that we just no longer need hoards of unskilled uneducated people who used to do labouring jobs.

  7. Bit simple. What would you do if working 60hrs a week for what a Polish guy is willing to take (off the books, no min wage) means you have less money in your pocket than staying on the benefits?

  8. That's because what used to be done here by hordes of unskilled people is being done abroad by hordes of unskilled people in other countries, cheaper.
Regardless of where it happens,manufacturing/building/infrastructure maintaining will always require a large majority of unskilled people to ensure the modern world continues to function in the way we currently enjoy it.
Should the pound continue to plummet in value,e,g if it reaches parity with the dollar, those industries abroad that currently manufacture abroad may find their goods too expensive to sell here, and immigrant labour might find it too expensive to live here if they are working for less than their British counterparts..IF that is the case.
In the long term manufacturing might move back here if labour is cheap compared to other countries.

  11. Prosecute the company that is paying the Polish guy. The abuse of employment law is growing at an alarming rate.

  12. When you say "how most see it", do you in fact mean "what my clan leader told me to post"?

Anyhoot, how are the lessons, finm? Been to your second session yet or are you repeating the first lesson? Again?

You promised me you'd given that up for Hanukkah or one of those other Scottish celebrations. You scamp!

Actually, you should get yourself over here. You'd see more sunshine in one day than you've seen in your entire life plus there's a lively Scottish community here. Plus I need you to translate for me when I am speaking to the lively Scottish community. It'll be fun! :upyeah:

  19. Have a wander around any city. Car wash stations. Hotel cleaners. Warehouse workers. Machinists. Or the country and pickets. Take your pick. At best zero hours contracts that allegedly pay min, minus certain stoppages;) at worst none are employed, none pay tax, none get anything. That's the reality of the bottom of the working society now, regardless of what middle class leftie idealists choose the think
