All the European manufacturers were using materials which were flammable, because their unrestricted use was legal in most, but not all EU markets, for most applications. Their use in the U.K. and French markets was legal but restricted. Unfortunately, those manufacturers were less than honest about their legitimate application and could be accused of breaching the Sale of Goods Act. The government decided to give designers more freedom and deregulated application of such materials. Grenfell is one result of that. The designers and installers did not understand how to apply flammable materials safely IMHO.

So it looks like Boris is planning a so called "hard Brexit" for 1st January 2021 and the EU for causing it.... go Boris. The EU are already planning for extensions and laid out threats to limit our financial markets unless we have complete EU alignment.... I think I'm starting to see his logic.... Q. Don’t know what to believe really, I’ll try though. The Eu are still looking for ways to stop Brexit or at least leave the U.K. wanting to rejoin as soon as possible (another referendum in a few years - yay ). Uk politicians want the same. MSM want the same. U.K. people - not so sure. Whatever the reasons I think people want the U.K. to leave the Eu.
Think of it this way - Government is no friend to the People. Once you get that, everything else begins to fall into place. People will interpret this as, "Oh, you must want anarchy!". (It is this kind of binary thinking, which is so prevalent in this forum and amongst people in general, that makes me want to sign up for a one-way Mars mission.) It is possible to have government ... which is a necessary evil ... but not have a government that has inserted its tendrils into every aspect of life. The barest minimum government is the right amount. All you have to do to make this work is accept that personal responsibility is the cornerstone of civilised society ... not "good government", not "one nation", not "for the many, not the few", not regulation, not free stuff. Too late for the UK, of course. The introduction and proliferation of the NHS nailed that coffin lid down good and proper.

Doesn't have to. Smaller communities are known to "look after their own". Too late for that, of course. On a serious note though - the NHS is essential in order to preserve life in a modern, over-crowded, impersonal society of strangers such as we have in the UK. There are simply too many disjointed non-communities and vastly too many human beings who are strangers, for anything other than "healthcare as industry". Unfortunately, the NHS then becomes the thick end of an even thicker wedge - what about the unemployed? What about people who don't want to work? What about single-parent families where producing a sprog is the fast-track to housing and financial support? We have to support a growing proportion of the population, whether or not any of them want to contribute to the wealth of the society in which they live. The UK is stuck in a trap of of its own devising, caught by its own misguided desire to "do right". There is no way out of this. Socialism will be the (brief) future of the UK, because no one will see another way out of the mess it is in and which is getting worse. Questions: Why aren't people who care about the NHS, etc, making vast (or as much as they can afford) voluntary tax payments to the Treasury? Why do they insist that "care and generosity" be made compulsory? Suggestion: Socialism isn't generosity, it is theft. Paying money to the government is inefficient. Government is terrible at doing stuff that isn't simply creating more government - they are good at that. Similarly, paying money to large charities is inefficient. I recently read some advice that didn't come from the MSM: if the Head of a charity is paid more than three times your annual salary ... you probably shouldn't donate to that charity. I have pondered that often.
