Mate,get a grip on yourself. Just hurling spiteful comments about someone elses nationality...is that really all you have to bring to the debate? If so I am very disappointed,people cannot choose where they are born. Other people have posted links to stuff printed in Scottish newspapers asking questions about the SNP's tactics/goals etc...why not make relevant comment on those reports? You could really help some of us out here...you know,why it's better to be independent from the UK,(where your country has a massive part in the decision making process- Scottish PM's and Chancellors for instance) but have a single vote out of 28,(if you join), in the Euro Parliament. The first bit I understand,(I mean the vast majority of English folk have been and continue to be ass-raped by the English aristocracy/monachy over the years so the Scots have even more right to be pissed off about it),but to jump straight into bed with those who stole your fishing grounds? The free movement of people as a condition for free market access negotiation is going to be very interesting indeed. I honestly can't see the EU backing down on it. Suppose you were the boss man of Romania. It's a system that works brilliantly for you. You get access to cheaper goods and can export your own (factories no doubt set up by multinationals to take advantage of cheap labour). You can export your surplus workforce and have them remit foreign earnings to help your country. If you had a veto over anything that would undermine that situation, you would use it. I do not fully understand if they do have a veto, but I suspect they do. You can repeat this scenario for pretty much all the ex-Eastern bloc countries. Whilst Germany may want to support its car industry, maybe it just won't be allowed to. In any case, they may decide to concentrate on other overseas markets which are booming (China, India etc). I don't think that the argument that we can tough it out with the EU will be shown to be right. The only real hope is to join some other trading bloc that can negotiate the deal that Britain wants. Merkel, as an ex-East German, has an affinity with all the Eastern bloc members and I suspect that her ideology drives her commitment to the EU. And France will stick closely with the EU in order to try and regain the influence it had when the Franco-German alliance ruled the roost. Taking away the commitment to free movement of labour is to question the whole EU project and I doubt any of them will vote for that. So what will happen? There may well be tariffs on German and French cars, but so what? That will make them more expensive, but the UK can't quickly go back to the time of British Leyland vehicles swamping the nation's roads. Consumers will just have to suck it up. The rich will still buy BMWs etc, just maybe less of them. As for EU farm produce, there are other places. The Moroccans will be happy to step into the vacuum vacated by the Spanish. New world wine already crams supermarket shelves. Cheese will be pricier - the British may eat more of theirs. It's not like trade is going to stop. There aren't many EU electric guitars you can buy, but we all buy American or Chinese ones. It doesn't seem to be an issue. Alternatively, as I have already said, the UK will back down on the immigration issue and congratulate itself that all its laws are now Made in Westminster ®. It won't be much of a result, but maybe the best they can do. Incidentally, when you hear that some big bank is going to remove 2'000 jobs from the City, you might ask yourself how many of those 2'000 jobs are being done by Brits. I doubt more than half.
