The referendum was advisory, not legally binding. When Parliament passes an Act, that really is legally binding. Whether Parliament passes Acts putting Brexit into effect or not is a political question. On the one hand, refusing to implement the Leave majority might be politically unpopular. But on the other hand, there are large majorities for Remain in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords; and few members want to go down in history as the ones who threw the UK off a cliff. At the moment it is anybody's guess what will happen. Invoking Article 50 has already been postponed from 24 June to October to 2017.

I understand that, Pete, but there isn't there something pretty fundamental here? The government sought the opinion of the people and the people made their opinion known. OK, the vote is not legally binding so overturning it is still constitutional. But surely, even in Westminster, there has to be some sense of moral obligation to the democratic process or referenda become pointless. Am I just hopelessly naive?
For those who think the UK will not be leaving the EU, just remember one simple fact: UKIP have not gone away. If parliament does not sign it off, existing MPs will be routed by UKIP in the next general election - thanks to FPTP. they will sign it off and then God help us all with that lot in charge.
Wally, you are assuming that a majority new what was right for the country. In this case I am not sure they do. Much of the voting was based on ignorance of the true facts.
I do get that duke but there is a potentially dangerous president. Regardless of how you or I feel about the result, if it is not honoured then don't we have a de facto nanny state?
I doubt that to be honest. UKIP have not been able to win a single seat in Parliament without it being a sitting MP that jumped ship, they are a far right single issue party and they wouldn't win more than a protest vote, what they might do is split the Conservative vote and allow Labour back in

If it was a legally binding vote then I would agree. But it wasn't and I suspect that may have been deliberately so.
