British Indy: What Happens Now?

Discussion in 'Wasteland' started by Loz, May 23, 2015.

?
  1. Full Brexit with "no EU deal" on the 29th March.

  2. Request Extension to article 50 to allow a general election and new negotiations.

  3. Request Extension to article 50 to allow cross party talks and a new deal to be put to EU.

  4. Request Extension to article 50 to allow a second referendum on 1. Remain in EU or 2. Full Brexit.

  5. Table a motion in parliament to Remain in EU WITHOUT a referendum.

  6. I don't know or I don't care anymore

Results are only viewable after voting.
  1. Corrected for you :)

  2. A friend at work said of the referendum result that it's like the conservatives have discovered a steaming turd on the carpet with David Cameron saying to Boris, "I'm not cleaning it up! You clean it up! It's your fucking dog!".

  3. Can we rename this thread the 'Insults and Handbags ' thread?

Handbags at dawn gentlemen (and ladies).

    ;)

  4. Because you ask so nicely; in fine diplomatic fashion, and to give El T more time to admire his new Ducati, I will desist in my replies to TT based on his pre-referendum insults.

You have my word Stu that this will be my last word to him on the matter. Skinchies, cross my heart. :Angelic:

  5. Thank you (see, that's how you do it El T :Angelic:)

  7. Good post. I like this, and it's surely true as far as redistributive policies go. There are exceptions, for example John Bercow MP (the Speaker) who grew more left wing.

In earlier generations, reactionary social attitudes were extremely common (hanging, flogging, discriminating against Jews, women, blacks, gays, foreigners, etc) but they have gradually weakened over time. A lot of people have become more tolerant and it comes as an occasional shock to find that atavism still has a grip on a proportion of the population. Today's young generation are much more tolerant at present; I wonder whether the same individuals will become less tolerant as they grow older, or if the shift is entrenched?

  14. Various people in or out of government in various countries are putting forward proposals about various matters, some of them contradictory. This is perfectly ordinary - people are always making proposals, as they are perfectly entitled to do, and they always will. Some ideas may attract support and get implemented; others won't. That's politics. So it goes. Still, it's interesting to see what policy proposals are being floated at the moment.

  15. Pete, I wonder if you would happen to know the comparison of the average Brit's income to the average Yanks income, before we joined up and now.
My impression is that we are now better off than the average American.
It would be interesting to know if there is any truth in that.

  16. In short, no. Brits have not been better off than Yanks for a hundred years.

But it depends how you calculate national income (itself a complex and many-sided question) and whether you use gross $ figures or deflate them according to price comparisons. Here are figures from three sources, weighted by Purchasing Power Parity:

List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roughly speaking, the UK comes out at about $41K and USA at about $55K per head per year, as at a couple of years ago.

    P. S. Bear in mind that if 1% of the population are billionaires and the other 99% are paupers, the average does not tell you much at all.

  17. Just for you:
