1200 Buyer Beware Or Bad Dealer?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by JimboP, Aug 10, 2014.

  1. HPI - dealer did that and it's clear but thank you for the offer.

I'll pop the guy a nice email asking for some help. I was happy to buy privately, from a main dealer or a trader. I prefer to buy privately normally because that way I get to meet the person and see how they treat their house, belongings, etc. If you buy from a dealer you can't know that information, so although you get more support you know less about how the car/bike has been treated. I judged the trader's character as a good man and I believe we'll come to an arrangement easily enough.

I chose this dealer/trader because I specifically wanted a very low mileage S Touring in red, somewhere either in London or close by to the W/SW/NW. There was a Sports at Metropolis for slightly less money but it was higher miles and would've then cost several hundred (more?) to add the grips, centre stand and panniers from the S Touring.

Mutley is really nicely sorted now (new tires, steering bearing adjusted, engine covers, bark busters, LEDs, HIDs, iPhone mount, small numberplate, etc) so I don't want to get a refund, perhaps just a little bit of money back to cover the expense of the steering head bearing and whatever it costs to get his brain updated so that he knows that he's an S Touring model (I'll post on that shortly).

Thanks for all the thoughts - much appreciated.

  2. Cant imagine the seller knew about the software

  3. With this post I've got the 8 most recent posts :D

  4. I hope they are all as useful as this spam one LOL.

Jimbo - back to your bike.
DES - the missing menu sounds like a software issue to me, as does the heated grips (from what I remember reading of a few posts beforehand they have to be "programmed" in at a dealer if they are fitted), get it into a reputable Ducati main dealer and get a full receipt for the work. You will want that later.
I take it you can change riding modes between Urban, Sport etc? If you turn the ignition on you should be able to change the modes and hear/feel the suspension moving if it is working correctly. There is a distinctive whir of cogs and if sat on the bike you can feel it move when on the side stand between Urban and Sport as it firms up and changes. I just hope that the problem is not a broken SCU or deliberately hiding a fault!

Tyre - I hate to tell you but that's just tough luck. Sorry, but my Scorpions at 3500 miles looked fine and would pass an MOT on tread depth legality but they didn't last more than a couple of hundred more before they had squared off completely and felt completely dodgy when leaning into corners. Puncture much the same, accidents happen - tell me about it I managed to get a puncture less than a mile from picking up a brand new Kawasaki - literally two corners away from the dealers, but was lucky that it was a new tyre and slap bang in the middle so just plugged it up.

As for contacting the seller/dealer. Write a letter, forget emails they are casual conversation that no one acts on. Say that you would like back the money you have spent (steering bearing and DES correction) putting the bike right and include copies of the receipts for the work - keep the originals and a copy of your letter for your own records as these could be useful if he doesn't want to play ball, you have to have shown that he has been notified of the faults and given time to correct them. Be polite, but firm - there is an art to complaining without just pissing people off, email can soon turn into pass the parcel and get you nowhere.
