Buying Tyres On Line ?

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by ymfb, Apr 10, 2015.

  1. Using my recently acquired (FOC) 55mm twelve point socket and borrowed from work 3/4" drive breaker bar and my rear paddock stand handle to extend the lever. I lowered the bike onto the tyre, put my right foot on the rear brake lever and hey presto.

Just need the new rubber to arrive and all being well back on the road for next weekend.

  2. Well my new Metzlers are on. I tried to undo the rear with my 55mm 12point socket and a chuffing great torque wrench but it wasn't going to budge, not for anything. So I gave up and took it to Omega bikes and they managed to get it undone....eventually. It was on there amazingly tightly.

The front was more complex as the callipers had to come off but not as firmly fixed. Everything off, new tyres on and back on the bike for £20 a pop. They earned it.

Good job done, tyres feel instantly different but need to ride out to find out properly.

I'll let you know what I think. Meantime, any recommendations on pressures?

  3. Had my rear M7RR changed this afternoon. (Bit by bit I'll get geared up to change my own.) Realised I'd got nearly 4000 miles out of it in the end. It was proper bald admittedly but still performing well. I've done some dual carriage way miles just recently and its only in the last 200 miles or so that its shown any sign of flattening off. Really can't fault the performance.
I'm running mine on my 1098 SF 35 rear and 33 front. I find that ideal.

  4. About a year ago, I was at an excellent presentation given by Bridgestone MotoGP team who are based in the UK. This guy was telling us, no matter whose tyres you use, make sure you put the manufacturers recommended pressures in, not the vehicle makers.

  5. Thanks for the links ^ - struggling to get Tyreleader to accept payment - hope it's just a glitch otherwise I will have just ordered 6 identical tyres : )

  6. They wouldn't accept my MasterCard, but it went through first time with my debit card

  7. mine was a Debit Card - they are a German company by the looks?

  8. I wish I knew what the tyre manufacturers recommendations were. Might be on the side of the tyre in the small print I suppose.

  9. Tyreleader do seem to be a German registered company.
The tyres I ordered came from France.
Delivered in England a few days later, on schedule.

  10. On the Pirelli website you can download a technical book, which shows the front is 2.3 & rear 2.4 bar

  11. Yes. Yes it is. Tyreleader have consistently been the cheapest in my experience, and they are considerably cheaper than any local tyre centre. Even if you have to pay to have the tyres fitted locally you'll save a stack of cash. The only downside is that you need to get the wheels off yourself. I haven't used a tyre centre to buy tyres for at least ten years.

As for getting them fitted, my local tyre fitter get the hump, so tries to charge a fortune to fit the tyres, so I don't use him. If you have a Merit Tyres place near you they normally let each fitter do the tyres for cash, so you'll only pay a tenner or 20 quid depending how skint the fitter is. I got both tyres fitted to the SV650 wheels, and balanced, for £15 at Merit in Sunbury.

  12. One thing to note about buying online:

Most people buy online cos it's cheaper, but buying cheap normally comes with a consequence. It's likely the tyres you can buy are not the latest range (for which they can command full price), they may also have had a long shelf life. It doesn't affect the tyres one iota, but at least one person here has got a proper strop on about it in the past, totally ignoring the fact the tyres were half price. Accept the compromise or pay full price. Simples.

  13. Can you help me out please I have been looking at the Pirreli website for tyre pressures , but can't find anything!

  14. Last year I bought some PR3's from tyre leader. Without reopening the debate about the effect of age of a unrun tyres, it makes sense to me to have a new one rather than an old one, so simply e-mailed tyre leader and asked them what the manufacturing date of their PR3's were. They provided this by return showing they were less than 6 months old. Ordered the tyres which arrived a couple of days later and the manufacturing date was as they had advised. The service I have had from tyre leader has been superb.

  16. update for me - never managed to successfully pay for my tyre order through 'Tyreleader' and unable to contact them despite several attempts (a 'catch 22' here - you are blocked from contacting if you haven't placed an order : )) so gave up and purchased via 'Oponeo' for only £3 more.

  17. Do tyre manufacturers recommend approved fitters or competent fitters?

  18. Had a new rear tyre put on by a fitter the other day and he uses a static balancer but I noticed he didn't balance this one. I asked why and he said that he couldn't get a spindle to fit the Ducati single-sided rear wheel so he did it by lining the dot and valve up. Have to say it rides perfectly but does that mean you can't balance SS rear wheels on a static balancer full stop or that he can't get the right adaptor for the particular balancer he uses? I want to start fitting my own tyres and this will obviously affect which kit I buy.

  19. A good car balancer will sort it out, mine will balance it dynamic or I can do static setting if you wish, ride over to BS5 9JJ
