Can’t Upload Photos On Here - File Too Big??

Discussion in 'Forum How To's - create an Avatar/Event/Group etc?' started by Multirider75, Mar 16, 2024.

  1. Screenshot (then edit it) on Android phones works the same way as the Snipping tool. @Ducbird - I expect your iPhone has something similar...

  2. Agreed, and it is so easy to use and time saving. If you have a complicated page from Excel - with lots of numbers and details - snip and paste it rather than try and replicate it all again.

We use it all the time in emails to show what we are talking about - so I quickly edit the snip by adding a border so that that it separates it from the white background of the email.

    Very very useful.

  3. Prior to using this tool I remember the misery of trying to import or convert files :(

  5. I’ve noticed this recently too, if your using an iPhone/ipad then guess it’s more to do with Apples image compression that has changed rather than the forum, (don’t know what the image size limit is but guess around 2MB?) On iOS there is a file size option you can choose when you upload, change this to Large/medium and you should be ok :upyeah:

  6. Possibly your new phone has a higher resolution camera and consequentially the file sizes are larger and beyond the the acceptable limits for uploading to the forum. Most hosting has limits on total site storage and thus impose limits. As a result website owners tend to limit file size on uploads to mitigate the risk of running out of space or having to pay for extra disk space. Most forum software will resize large images prior to display as large file sizes add to bandwidth and frustrate users on slower connections.

Apple devices tend to use their proprietary HEIC format for storing images from the camera and users of these devices wonder why their images are not accepted for upload. Simple answer is that they need to be converted to JPEG first. Browsers don't support this format and it's probably licenced by Apple to the extent that open source PHP isn't able to work with it to convert (Apple and open source are diametrically opposed to each other in terms of ethos). Apple, in their infinite wisdom, didn't think of this scenario for some reason...

There are external libraries, not all web hosts provide these, for PHP that can handle HEIC to JPEG conversion but if they aren't incorporated into the forum software to start with will require a plugin or reverse engineering that will possibly be lost in an update.

  7. Ah ok, yes I have changed phones recently, and it has a much higher res camera, so that could well be the issue.

  8. Can someone advise what the max size is as I can’t upload photos without modifying them first.

  9. If youre on windows hit the start menu button once and then start to type out "snip" which is the snipping tool open your photo and then use the snip tool to take a copy....the snip tool makes really small file copies.... (thats what i do when i get that error) - a bit long winded but it does work...

  10. ^ this

  11. 2Mb I think, but, if you’re on your phone, iPhone or Android, just resize it before uploading. It’s an option available to you after you’ve selected the photo you wish to upload. If you have an iPhone I can demonstrate.

  12. I have an iPhone, but when I’m surfing it’s on my iPad. Yesterday I used a screenshot, which worked well, thanks

  13. It’s 3Mb :)

  14. Select upload file
    Select Photo Library
    Select the photo
Before clicking Add in the top right corner click the adjust symbol ( looks like 2 little slider buttons) in the bottom right corner, you’ll then be able to adjust the size of the selected image from full to Large or medium both of which work well on here.
You can also decide to leave out any location information.
    Finally click the Add link.

  15. The simplest photo size trick is to email them to yourself and select a smaller size when prompted by the email app. Use the saved smaller image then delete the smaller image when finished. Quick and simple. Happy Christmas all!
