Can You Improve The Headlights

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by PeteDuke, Sep 2, 2016.

  1. I had a 2 sets of these (all 4 bulbs) on my 2010 MTS1200 and they were brilliant (no pun intended) with a good cut-off on the dip beam. They were as good if not better than the HIDS they replaced.
I tried fitting them to my Supersport 939 and they worked well but the fan housing got clouted by the bottom yoke on full lock :(

  2. Allow me to intrude on the headlight club! One of my pet hates will come back very soon. That is the number or cars (don't see it on bikes that much) with - what looks to me - illegally bright dipped beams. Yes, they can see fine as they dazzle all oncoming traffic. I particularly enjoy the cars with a defective headlamp who 'compensate' by keeping the working light on high beam all the time. Car drivers can drive round with impunity on defective lights because the Police don't give a fuck with the emphasis on speeding. Car manufacturers don't help by making it fucking awkward to replace a blown bulb. Did my daughters's Ford Ka a few years ago - what a PIA! The official way is to take off the front wheel and remove the wheel mudguard to get at the headlamp.

    Sorry, rant over!

  3. I had similar and cut off was non existent. Did yours have the little hood over the diode as the pics don’t show one. I’d try it based on your recommendation if the pci showed a hood (like the Philips Xtreme Ultinon have)

  4. I can't remember. I'll have to look and see.

  5. Anyone looked into these?

  6. This is common across many manufacturers now.

  7. And the trouble is that people are reluctant to visit a workshop for a bulb change - accepting that lots of workshops will want you to make an appointment in two weeks time for the job to be done - giving yet more time to drive around with defective lights!

  8. I had a Toyota Yaris some years ago. I was working away and knew that it would be dark on my drive back. I got a bulb and paid for it to be fitted at the local Halfords. It was fitted by a South African lawyer who wasn't licensed to practice in the UK! Money well spent.

  9. It will depend on the bike as some models have a relay for one of the beams already, or a relay before the dip switch which not so good as the current still has to go through the switch plus various connectors. I'll draw up something generic and post it later.

  10. My Saabs front lights are a right fucking pain in the arse to get too. Esp front nearside. You need to be a contortionist to get a new bulb in and out.

  11. I have a 9-5, it is easiest to remove the headlight. It only takes a couple of minutes. Fortunately they are HID and don't need changing very often.

  12. You must have more room on 95, Ive a 93 aero and its a right bugger.

  13. I doubt it. It's a 9-5 Aero and there is hardly room to squeeze a slip of paper in there but removing the headlight requires; unclip and remove the indicator unit (15sec), unclip and remove the outboard section of the radiator grille (10sec), remove the screw at the top of the radiator unit, the one below the indicator and the one behind the grille and pull the headlamp forward (1 min). These times will be 2 or 3 times longer the first time ;)

  14. I have to unclip a fusebox by battery and pull it out the way and thats all the room I get.

  15. Basic wiring diagram as promised:

  16. Hi, thanks everyone for the info. So in the short term I went to Halfords and got the best I could there but they are still crap at best. Order the bulbs below but there is a fan attached so I cannot get the lamp housing back on. Has anyone drilled out a hole of the lamp housing and sealed? And will it pass an MOT? Cheers

  17. Those don’t seem to have anything to block the higher portion of light and create a clear cut-off. They therefore won’t pass.

  18. Hi, sorry what I meant was if the lamp housing had holes in the back when I put my Halford bulbs back in would it fail an MOT? On what you have just said do you think these would blind people coming towards me? Cheers

  19. Yes these will likely blind people, and no the hole in the housing would not cause MOT issues.

  20. I had these same LEDs in my 2010 Multi and had no issues with the MOT. Fit them and point the bike at the garage wall and see what they look like. As long as there is a defined cut-off beam pattern with no significant scatter they will pass.
