999 Carbon Fibre Tank Leak

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by yellowducmaniac, Oct 3, 2015.

  1. I thought someone enlightened us to the fact the super unleaded fuels all have Ethanol in them now too?

  3. There's a Total station listed just round the corner from me :) no date on the list though and worrying that in some parts of the country they add it. Surely this factor could be rolled out within days and may already have happened.

  4. I have always understood BP Ultimate has never used ethanol especially in the eastern counties where I live. Only fuel I ever use. Also a Total station near me. But who knows.

  5. Thanks, can you remember which sealant you used together with the O ring?...I've been looking at some Loctite 5922 ,its seems to be one of the only ones which is petrol resistant.

  6. I'm pretty sure it was Gasket Sealants : Permatex® PermaShield™ Fuel Resistant Gasket Dressing & Flange Sealant

We used to use it in the forces and when you consider the harsh environments and temperature changes the vehicles are used in, it never leaked once. It's ethanol resistant aswell

  7. Disassembled fuel tank/pump this morning and fitted a new Viton O ring, also sealed the inner flange of the pump body with some Permatex sealant, doesnt really say how long to leave the sealant before normal operations can resume,i'll leave it for 24 hours and then put some petrol in the tank...fingers crossed.

  8. It cures to a hard but semi soft sealant by evaporation. It should be ok after 24hrs. Advantage is that it sits in a nice warm area and is ideal for constant temperature changes such as engine running and then cooling when turned off which it is designed for.

Hope it works as I can't think of anything better to use, it done me proud on my Landy Defender in the Army (although it's not AK-47, IED, RPG or motor fire resistant!)

  9. Sounds like the ideal stuff, the bikes due for its big service in the new year, with hindsight maybe I should've changed the fuel filter as well while I was in there, will the old sealant clean off okay for re-assembly without problems?

  10. Yeh, it's designed for things like flanges and gaskets to be taken apart and reassembled, hence the reason it's designed to dry semi soft. Just use Isopropyl Alcohol to use to remove. Although I never used it. If the sealant has dried for a long time at high temp, just cover with alcohol and allow to soften overnight. But it's not really in a high temp area.

Basically it just needs to be softened more for removal. I used to just add an alcohol base cleaner just to get it off.

  11. Looks okay this morning ,the sealant has set to a flexible rubbery consistency ,just put a gallon of Juice in the tank....:Nailbiting:

  14. Phew!...glad it went all ok, its good stuff and removable. Happy Days.

  15. Yeah well done . You got the right result.

  16. Just an update to the above...I have recently returned my bike to its OE yellow and have sold the red bodywork that was on it ,I decided to keep my carbon tank and have it colour matched to the yellow, and even though the tank didn't leak around the fuel pump when it was red it doesn't seem to like being yellow (please no anti-yellow puns!) and it is weeping past the O ring again, i reassembled it exactly as before with a new O ring and the Permatex gunk and left it 24 hrs before putting some petrol in (super unleaded), but it is deffo leaking, i'm getting to the stage where i'm clutching at straws on how to tackle it, as stated before the tank is carbon with a bonded in alloy insert for the O ring to seat, it didn't leak for over 6 months before and I cant get my head round why it is doing now...any suggestions welcome, has anyone had similar problems and does anyone know of any other sealant that might do the job?...I'm assuming that the O ring isn't sealing the aperture as it should be,or could I be barking up the wrong tree?

  17. Can you take the tank off, sprinkle with talc (the tank, not you) and sit and watch?

  18. Thanks but what would I be watching for,i assume you mean to rule out any other porous areas? ...i'm pretty sure its leaking past the O ring, but I will do the underside of the tank tomorrow just to be doubly sure.

  19. Yes, just to see where the seep starts, then check for any flaws where it appears on the sealing surface. Hopefully it won't be seeping through the carbon to insert join.

  20. Thanks, I had assumed it was the O ring seal ,but like you say it could be the join between insert and tank, I hope not. The thing is it is difficult to tell because the fuel pump flange overlaps the o/d of the alloy insert. ..happy days! ...
