Ceramic Coating Panels.

Discussion in 'Detailing and cleaning' started by FirePhil, Jan 20, 2019.

  1. Err...ok - well, im a System Administrator for a job (thats computers to you), have been for the last 20 years...read me like a book. Bang to rights.

  2. High end cars have ceramic laquer clearcoat over the colour basecoat. It’s a lot tougher and resists scuffs and scratches. It’s a common practice to re-furb plastic car headlights with the stuff, to resist stonechips etc. I’ve used the nexa/ppg stuff. Not cheap!

  3. Ok so you seem like a very educated individual & an administrator. ok. so why do you think that ceramic coating is the new world answer to corrosion.

  4. Wow...you literally read what you want to. I never said ceramic coating was the be all and end all....in fact - take a moment to scoot back up the thread Mr angry man. I totally agree - tried ceramic coating a few years back....totally useless.

And no, for the record ive not one IT qualification as such to my name....just been doing it for a very long time. As i said...ive ridden through a lot of winters in my time. No coating will protect your pride and joy for ever, its just that a good coating will protect it for longer.

  5. Sorry did not know that a system administrator was a expert on corrosion

  6. Well that escalated quickly.........!
Maybe I should of put.... 'what's the best way to protect my pride and joy, that I have spent my last pennies on and want to look gorgeous, even though I will be in the garage most nights just looking at it and contemplating another coat of wax'.
I agree with the stone chips, maybe film is the way.....but I like the idea of dustbin lids too..... maybe I should just put it in the front room to preserve it..... :p

  7. Sounds like as a car/van/lawnmower sales man you are. Based on your logic I'm gonna stop in Tescos and get a few black sharpies to sort the sump out in my Z1000. That'll sort it right out.

  8. Well, im not normally a firey person and tend to stay out of spats but mr gtr got on the offensive straight away, if anyone scoots back up the first shots fired were by him on a topic that, after most recently 2 complete bike strips and using a variety of different coatings, and riding through god knows how many winters id say ive got a reasonable amount of experience with. And, the only norm being that oem coatings last the least amount of time. Im not saying if you coat your bike with x,y or z it will last forever but i am saying that if you do, then itll last a bit longer, and depending on what you use, maybe much longer.

With regards to plastics ive never really used anything as plastics are pretty easy to keep clean, as theyre the most external on a bike and agreeing with gtr, yeah - bit of WD40 and your good. If you do long miles then maybe some sort of film would be in order. My hypermotard has those clear plastic covers on the fork legs(2010 plate) the zed has nothing and also has no mark or stone chips on them either and marginally more miles as its my every dayer...no answer on that one.

If your looking after an oil rig and you want to stick something to the leg and make sure its doesnt corrode, xylan is what is used, not poster paints, Sharpies, powerder coating or plastic coating, its a specific tool for the job, high salt content...i think the "the sea" would be the highest salt content that i know of. Based on that, that is why i used it. I took advice from a mate who has been building bikes for the last 30 years, his most recent being a couple of years back in PB (the xr69 replica that had a 6 page spread) yeah...the engine is coated in xylan.

So stepping back and calming down a bit ill summarize and say, yes, i believe if you want to protect the metal'y bits of your engine/bike, the 2 ive used are xylan and Cerakote, for me they work brilliantly.

  10. I think we were at crossed purposes. I was under the impression the guy was on about the stuff you see on youtube doing Ferrari's etc Put on with a cloth. I think you are referring to stove enamel type paint.

  11. Isn't called ceramic because they claim it is much stronger than a wax layer? Basically same properties/function as as wax just lasts much more longer?
Nothing to do with proper ceramic coating like Cerakote.

  12. Try G Techniq Crystal Serum Lite or if proffessionaly applied Crystal Serum Pro.
You have to apply these coatings properly so it becomes a long job but provides stunning results. The Pro version is so tough it can only be removed with wet and dry, that's why only people like Rob are allowed to buy it.

  14. You can put it on paint. But for the love of Christ get a detailer to do it (will cost a fortune) but it’s permanent !
