I have said this before and for information I will repeat it. The CANbus does not affect charging via the diagnostic connector, the connector is just a means of accessing the battery. Pin 1 of the connector is battery +ve Pin 2 is battery -ve Pin 3 is CAN High Pin 4 is CAN Low. The charging connector uses pins 1 an 2 and does not engage with the CANbus I use and old style optimate with a converter to fit the Ducati connector.
I had a genuine Ducati charger if lasted months. Now I use my old optimate for the bike and one for the campervan over the winter.
Makes the Ducati specific connector seem like a pretty pointless accessory then. When you could just connect to the battery terminals instead. OK, that puts a mark against the Ducati one then. Bollocks, spent so much on the bike thus far anyway what's another few quid? Optimate 4 ordered along with their Ducati plug as I found it at close to £20 in the end. Time is money and I've burnt enough of the former procrastinating on this... Thanks for all your advice though I do seem to have ignored a fair amount of it
Yes, you could. The only reason I bought the Ducati connector was because I couldn't be hassled taking the fairing off to get at the battery.
On my 1260 S Mutley, it's easy enough to get direct to the battery. On my previous BMW R1200GSA I used a BMW charger via the DIM socket on the dash. The special BMW charger ensured that the Canbus's/ECU's brain didn't shut the charger (circuit) down which it would do to a simple Optimate charger.
