Chinese Power Stations UK (Nuclear.....FFS)

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Ghost Rider, Oct 17, 2013.

  1. Something must be done, we're running out of energy (I'm told), and harnessing wave power ain't going so well, so nuclear power seems to be the obvious choice. Wind power would meet less resistance if they were to put the wind farms in appropriate places (on industrial estates? Motorway verges?) rather than on greenfield sites. And I still say that a country like ours should be using the many thousands of constantly flowing rivers to turn millwheels, just like the good old days, only producing power instead of flour.

But for the bulk of our power we need heavy plant, and nuclear is the most cost effective and greenest solution. Bring it on.

  2. I don't think the argument is "should we have nuclear power or not", but more that "should we put the safety and energy security of the uk in the hands of a foreign nation?"

we used to have the ability to design and build nuclear plant, but our fine politicians allowed short-sighted "market forces" to dictate our energy needs (Thatcher govt, iirc, set in motion the dash-for-gas where a plethora of ccgt gas fired power stations were built, thus depleting our gas supplies far too quickly).

stable and grown up energy policy would see a blend of fuels generating electricity, including "green" coal fired stations which would have continued to improve had the coal mines not been shut and the energy markets not rigged in favour of short term profiteering.

Seems to me that the politicians are happy to bail out their buddy's in the banking and finance sector, but are not prepared to put the same efforts into securing our energy security on a long term basis.

  3. A foreign nation that has a far better nuclear safety record than us, you mean..?

  4. As I am sure China has full and open disclosure on all incidents affecting safety and the environment.

  5. Have we..?

  6. We have less places to hide stuff, more organised "watchers" (greenpeace, etc), and if somebody does speak out, they won't "disappear" or have some phoneybaloney charge leading to life imprisonment.

So, yes, I believe we do have a more transparent system, even if it is sometimes not by design, but by protest/opposition.

  7. I think you worry too much.

  8. I often tell myself the same, but I don't believe him :-o

  9. Let's face it, the Chinese have the raw materials, the manpower and the cheapest price. The job will be overseen by our own engineers (although that doesn't necessarily fill me with confidence), and it won't go over budget at all, oh no.

    What could possibly go wrong..?

  10. Of people are kicking off about noise at Mallory and HS2, imagine is they build a nuclear plant in their back yard...

  11. Once upon a time Britain made stuff.

Then it was found that it was better if the Chinese made stuff in China and we imported it. We would devote our energies to opening shops to sell the Chinese stuff.

In the latest development, we get the Chinese to build the stuff in the UK for us, thus eliminating transport costs. This is greener.

Coming shortly: the Chinese open the shops to sell their own stuff as they do already in Spain. After all, they made the stuff and understand it better than us and they can open shops more cheaply. Plus they also speak Chinese which is really handy when you are selling to all the Chinese who are in the UK making stuff.

In other news, the Govt announced a new financial centre to be built by the Chinese in Scunthorpe. This will predominantly focus on Asian markets as that is where the future of the finance industry lies. It is set to rival and then surpass the City of London. Not only will it bring jobs to the area, but by setting up a new financial hub in the north, relieve pressure on London and the south east. It is expected to employ predominantly Chinese people as they speak the Asian languages in which their cash-rich corporate customers prefer to do business.

The Govt is giving the project heavy subsidies. A spokesman has said that this centre will soon be a net tax contributor allowing British pensioners to live in the style to which they are accustomed and to pay the increasing unemployment benefit bill for the now underskilled British "workforce".

  12. My brother works for the National Grid. The UK's largest contracts are with Shanghai Power, and he regularly has to visit China with regard to Nuclear Installations. We (UK) are currently working with Hitachi and Shanghai Power to develop new nuclear turbines. From what i gather, these will be installed in our current facilities and ones that are either being built or are in the planning stages of construction. Whether we like it not, we are going down this route.
The Chinese 'joint ventures' have been going on apace since well before this government. if the public knew the full extent there would probably be large protests.
To my knowledge, my brother has been doing presentations, and reports, showing Chinese officials around our plants for over 10 years.

  13. it probably already is.

The early nuclear power stations were first developed as a means of 'purifying' uranium and plutonium for nuclear weapons.. the elements have to be distilled as it were (i dont know the correct scientific term, thats my brothers department)...these elements are by products created from the nuclear power stations.
China also accepts much of our nuclear waste, and some of this is essentially recycled. We do not have the same level of technology to accomplish this.
As our ties with the Chinese nuclea industry are so close, i would not be surprised to find that we were indeed involved in a mutal nuclear weapons development programme.

  17. How much clout has he got, then?

  18. FFS . Once again shite is written and people think what the toilet roll press print is true. The financing of the design, construction, commissioning and operating will be partially funded by Chinese money. It doesn't mean the Chinese will actually be in the UK you wazzocks.

As for the Chinese engineers, you will find they are managed by European engineers. Yes even China. Even in heavily regulated industries. China is a burgeoning market for Design, Construction and Management companies. It's not like I have ever been there.......................

  19. true..the difference being that when these cats get in power they dont have an Empire..they have a Dynasty...and im not talking shoulder pads here....more like panty pads for the rest of the world for about 500 years.

  20. .....and of course, as the Chinese haven't anywhere near caught them up in quality, we must not forget the Japanese, who already skilled in engineering, got round to building brilliant motorcycles and cars; brilliant audio & visual electronics stuff; sought after timepieces; etc etc etc.......

.........and one or two pretty shit nuclear power stations, which still haven't been sorted out.........
