Newfern clutch plates £80 new any good , I ain’t no racer just street riding adcoming back to bikes after 15yrs
Newfren have been around for a long time and are used by many budget conscious owners. Never used them myself but do not see a reason not to try them. Andy
I have used OEM Ducati plates, 'Ducati Racing' sintered plates and now Newfren plates which I have in both the 916 and Monster and I can safely say the Newfren work as well as either of the Ducati plate setups - no problems whatsoever so, for the price I'd say go for it.
Get the right backing plate material to match your clutch basket - steel and steel or alu with alu. Don’t mix or you will have a very short life of one or the other.
Ergal (aluminium-zinc alloy) is another (not cheap) option. It is as light as aluminum and as hard as steel. So compatible with steel. The best of both world, imho.
if O.P. had displayed ultra-poverish means and approach then I would have suggested these, but purists and people of pecunity will probably kick me around the workshop for bringing such a lack of decorum to the place. P.S. - i see Newfren aren't a lot more these days.
Feck I am pissed from a Jonny marr concert and just seen this laughing my bollocks off. Cheers guys newfern ordered daft questions to follow when sober
Ok so having a go at this , clutch out and basket removed my original stack height was 38.5mm now I want to try the quiet mod , so I take out the last steel plate,(there are 2 together nearest the crank) and fit a friction plate in its place , the steel was 2mm the friction is 2.85mm so my new stack height is 39.6mm is this too close ?
Isn't there a concave or convex (if you turn it around) one in there somewhere with a dot on it, or is that just early 90's SS's. Cheers Gaz
Could I get 2x1.5 steel plates , remove two 2 mm plates and then fit the 1.5 which should knock 1mm off total height , so then 38.6
I'd wait until you actually have your new plates before ordering more parts to do an anticipated stack height. If the newfren ate just 0.1 or 0.2 different then your stack is already up to 1.5mm different.
I will Sev on here kindly provided clutch plates and basket so was going to get this setup running and save/refund the others
Greetings from the posh side of the Pennines. Another option that appeals to the tight fisted (me), one that I have tried and been happy with, is to use Suzuki GS/GSX range friction plates, they are easily available and usually much cheaper, can’t use their plain plates though. You can lap your plain plates flat with a sheet of fine wet and dry paper and a flat surface and they are usually perfect for reuse I’ve used the Suzuki plates for years with no issues in my 900ss Do check that the pressure plate bearing is in good condition
I think 2 x1.5 would be better , I’m lead to believe new it would have been all 1.5 plates can you buy single plates , if so from who?
Nelly from Cornerspeed Ducati, who is also a member here will sort you out. He's a top man and he's also a fountain of knowledge and always helped me with any questions I had.
