Good advice this. I also only have dead locks fitted on my doors now as it's too easy to lock yourself out with the yale type locks...….ask me how I know. You can have the side panel glass etched for privacy which is nice and modern with the house number left clear along these lines.
If the frosted glass is extra and enough for you to go feck that, you can buy frosted effect vinyl from b&q for that glass privacy if you feel comfortable doing it https://www.diy.com/departments/d-c...hesive-window-film-l-2m-w-680mm/192284_BQ.prd
we had nice wooden doors before we got the double glazing put in, i allowed myself to be perswaded to swop them out for PVC. the look OK, but, meh, not as good as a quality wooden one.
These were the best ones I have seen, I was in the window, door and conservatory industry for 30 plus years. https://www.rockdoor.com/ Find stockists and shop around for price. Not cheap but superb doors. There are so many composite doors on the market, some real rubbish too that is not fit for purpose. The Rockdoors have various levels of security but even the basic ones are better than many on the market. I had two installed at my last house.
Whichever lock you go for, lever/lever, long bar, escutchion etc. , a good idea is thumbturn on the inside of the lock. This has some advantages, a key cannot be left inside, stopping a key going in from outside (sleeping teenagers!!), no problem getting out in a fire because cant find keys, easier on a morning than looking for keys and less scratching of handles on the inside. Thresh detail, there are choices. Pvc, aluminium. Pvc slightly more weather proof, the big issue is it damages easy. I prefer aluminium and living in Consett had no leaks over three years with mine. The aluminium and weather bar can be colour matched to the door.
Just had a quote, 1 metre wide Door with obscure full length 800mm glass side panel, normal handle, reasonable spec with Fensa installation £1503.00 Same local company that made my Bi Folds and Patio Doors who have a good reputation. Will phone him later to haggle a bit more but happy with this. Thanks for all the help geezers
The split handle is great if you forget to lock your door from the inside as people can't just walk up and open your door, but you have to be careful. I found out when I was putting stuff in the car one day and my dad, who was visiting came out of the house behind me and pulled the door to. I had to remove the top panel from above the garage door, release the garage door then break down the internal garage door to get back in the house.
I know you are sorted @Exige but I've bought a couple of doors from these, and they are top notch. https://www.globaldoor.co.uk/
Just goes into the hall with a normal narrow door to the living room so yes, but only one Got him down to £1350 with some bartering and mentioning a fire door into the garage which he quoted at £2400 including the knock through and lintel. Think I'll do the garage one myself
Lol, the split spindle only works the centre latch and takes seconds to get in, you should have given me a ring, you will know next time On the matter of the split spindle, when using a composite door always lift the handle up to engage all the locks as they are prone to warping like any other door and engaging all the locks will prevent it, a lot of door manufactures will not honour any warpage claims.
Yes it is normally 10mm extruded ali with clip in upvc trims, you will always have a bit of flex on a mullion with a side light and this is exaggerated even more with a comp door as they take a little more force to open and close them due to the wool pile.
I moved a massive Howden kitchen from Harrogate to York the other day fookin ell it went on and on then stumbled across 10 doors to go with it at 33kg each I was mildly livid, the fella was improving his house by doing an extension etc the guy who did the steelwork was unfortunately the guy who was killed on his pushbike the other night on Stockton lane in York very sad
