Thanks! I've been using their online parts fiche and checking up prices for some of the parts. But I was hoping I could find most of them here, or on ebay, ideally good used ones Once I've got all the panels and tank off, just gonna give it a good clean, take apart the front end and check the forks/yokes/discs/spindle and then have Maidstone Motoliner do their magic on the wheels (if they can!).
I've ridden worse. If it was cheap enough I'd be of the mind just to get it legal and have myself a great winter bike. Practice my sliding and general arsing about. Sure you wouldn't have bought it if you weren't going to enjoy the work as much as the riding so have fun and keep us posted on how it's going.
If you go the aftermarket root for the tail tidy Don'tuse r&g. Fit is poor, not their usual quality. Very poor aftersales service. Not what I expected at all.
Yeah get it well checked out for "true" in the frame and forks. Looks can be deceiving. The bars are slightly outta true. Check it out. Don't worry about the mirrors/brackets; plentiful. All ancillaries are easily replaced. Rule of thumb is strip the living shit off it, of every broken part, then assess. The tail is gonna need a strip and some parts. Of you can get them on eBay more power to ya. Otherwise Omaha. Re-doing wheels.......hmmm.....I wouldn't be too confident in that sport. Doable yes,....but.... Mate, I'll put a pint to a pound on it, you won't see a penny of change from £5000 by the time she's on the road. Money well spent though if she's not twisted.
I think to check the frame you'd have to pull the engine to get all the measurements. One thing to check stretta is the shifting mech. The foot shifter usually takes a hard hit and this caused a problem inside the case on mine.
I'll keep it in mind, thanks for the heads up - I hadn't thought about that! The foot shifter is slightly bent, so some of the impact must have gone through it I've had a few write offs before, I really don't think the collision was serious enough to have bent the frame, but you never know!
This is how far I am at the moment: And a better pic of the bent rear wheel: It's surprising how far mud can get into the nooks and crannies! Next step is to get the tank off, give it a better clean, then disassemble the front end, and get the rear wheel off (need to buy the right socket first). Wheels will then get sent to Motoliner for straightening. Surprisingly, only one of the fairings needs any paint (the LHS tank fairing). The carbon panels and beak are fine, but the front fairing needs one of the tabs plastic welded. Pictures coming soon!
This is what it looks like so far! The dash polished up quite nicely, but the crack is really pissing me off!! Is there anything I can do about it at all?
Bearing in mind the cost of a new one, i think i would leave it as is. The rear subframe looks as though its out of true in the head on photo. You have a fair bit of work to do but i reckon it may well be worth it.
Yep, the rear left side subframe is slightly out, but its quite 'flexy' as it is, and once the tool tray/pillion grip assembly is bolted to it, it'll be fine! And yes, the front end is slightly out, but I haven't taken it apart yet, hopefully once I've disassembled it, checked everything for run out and put it back together, it'll be okay.
Hi Stretta what did you use to polish the instrument panel with ? I have a light scratch on mine but am reluctant to touch it with anything. Yours looks pretty good now. Cheers.
I used Autoglym Paint Renovator, but any fine scratch removing compound should do it, just don't go too heavy!
Yes definitely! Why wouldn't I? It had far less damage than any track bike thats had a reasonable speed highside, would you throw every dropped track bike away?
Don't see why not if he repairs it properly. And bearing in mind that he seems to know what he is doing and will be riding it himself i reckon he will make sure its OK.
Seats! The riders seat isn't too bad, just a couple of small tears right at the rear edge: The pillion seat faired a bit worse, complete with caked on mud that just won't wash off! I do like the red stitching and the design of the seats, so I may get the covers repaired, but in the meantime, I bought the DP touring seat that was being sold on the forum, so I'm now looking for the matching pillion seat:
