Crashing; Fibre Glass or Carbon?

  1. Exactly, a fairing is only useful as slide protection if they don't move in an off, if your bike hooks a kerb or drags through a gravel trap the chances are the fairing will be torn off. Decent case covers like NRC or Woodcraft will protect the expensive bits far more effectively
     
  2. I wonder how much firm fitting also affects damage. My gixer seat unit was pretty much destroyed at a 30mph low side where I was already elbow-close to the ground and slid into gravel. I suspect because it was fitted very firmly, the impact mean the mountings didn't allow flex so just smashed. Not sure how I sort that on the replacement which I'm yet to fit
     
  3. That would be great 1037 because I can't picture how you have the tape. The sand bag idea is brilliant.

    Obviously case savers are a good investment but a bit of stainless on the inside of the fairing wouldn't hurt I'm thinking.

    I'm not convinced that the advantages of crash bobbins out weigh the disadvantages. A big mushroom shapped one under the fairing might be the go but I have never seen one, they all look too 'sharp' to me. Plus axle bobbins would be a PITA me thinks.
     
  4. This is a nice case saver that is very rare, it is an original Ducati Produced item that was given to those competing in the Ducati Monster challenge quite a while back. It will fit 748-9*6 cases, I know as I have tried it on to check the fit, it's held by silicone normally. I reckon it might fit 998\999 etc but I would need to check that.

    It's Carbonfibre with a Kevlar centre backing. Looks good in that it will save the case bottom and the water pump up to a point. If this could be reproduced what would be the interest? as I might look into it if there were enough takers.

    It fits pretty nicely under a fairing although it was not originally designed for that as the bikes were naked. I reckon it would add that bit of extra protection.

  5. ^ I like that. Maybe CC could run something like this...

    Plastics seem to be more durable to me. A tatty set of OEM plastics has to be a good option too.
     
  6. the DP carbon clutch casing protecter went right through after a 10 meters scrub... more bling than protection i found.. :)

  8. After a quick check it looks like they do a plastic clutch cover but nothing for the Near side at all. They of course do fairing crash bungs.

  11. Use nylon66
    On the race bikes we would use a combination of fiberglass and nylon66.
    Fixed footpegs also helped keep cases off the floor but dig in on curbs. The most important thing is calculating the right places to protect without causing edges that can cause it to flip. If it flips you can usually say expect an empty wallet after or a looking for a new bike.
     
  12. Forget Carbon if you are looking for protection. You need Kevlar, however, Kevlar will soak up way more resin than Carbon and therefore weighs more but it has superior abrasive resistance, although its a bitch to cut/finish.

    Fibreglass is lighter than Carbon, its only because it uses twice the resin amount to soak up within the fabric that it weighs more as an end result. Ever tried carbon unidrectional cloth, way stronger than plain or twill weave or Twaron Aramid Fibre?
