899 Dangerous Rear Wheel Axel Failure

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by El Vikingo Tropical, Dec 13, 2019.

  1. Yes, I do recall - tragic :worried:

  2. Frightening isn’t it. Hopefully Ducati and some engineer boffins carry out a thorough post mortem on the bike and get to the bottom of it ASAP

  3. This one? Didn’t op say no one was badly hurt?

  4. All evidence etc, if serious injury or worse happens to someone else due to a similar failure.

  5. Started some fag packet sums based on approx geometry of my 1098.
Gotta cook family dinner now so will finish tomorrow hopefully.

I do agree with you:upyeah: but to give the man the benefit of the doubt English is not his mother tongue.

  10. The road workers/filming bloke saying the wheel was 300m from where the bike came to rest and no sign of any poo anywhere! Impressed!

  11. And more luckily no sign of blood either :upyeah:

  12. You can see (iirc) the beach marks showing progressive fatigue failure running CW from 12 o'clock to around 3 0'clock when she let go. It would take close metallurgical examination to show what started this sequence off !
Please do let me know if I am talking utter b@llocks - I do have history !!

  13. Nothing wrong with a suggestion. :upyeah:There's (possibly) something even more revealing in the top picture but would need to see in the flesh to confirm, and, just like the comments after the rear damper eyelet mount fail on that relevant thread that were (quite rightly) removed, as mentioned earlier in this thread, it won't help to speculate so will stop there.

  15. Pointless surmisising without knowing the full facts .

Wheel could have been refitted incorrectly, caliper could havd siezed on. Who knows.

  16. A none standard bolt on the left slightly backed off from its last green service mark.
But not a biggy perhaps

  17. Agree. Even if it makes an owner just do extra checks, it’s worth it

  18. Really hoping the axle ends up in Bologna for metallurgical testing. This definitely warrants further investigation and HQ to talk to the dealer/owner to establish what maintenance regime it was subject to and/or should have adhered to. Dealer only or home DIY for example. Another failure like this might not end up as forgiving for the rider. In any case if it were my bike I would be demanding they test the part, if all the maintenance had been carried out appropriately and torque figures respected.

  19. It's being reported on another Forum that he rode it for 3 days with a "wobbly" rear wheel, if this is true he deserves all he got IMHO.
