Decent French Hotel Recommendations

Discussion in 'Touring' started by Multirider75, May 18, 2023.

  1. Right folks, I’ve got two unbooked nights left, so somewhere around Limoges and somewhere around Chartres. Don’t fuck about with rubbish, recommend the best you’ve got. I’m going down in a blaze of glory.

Remember, no town centres, fine dining and a swimming pool are absolutely essential.

  2. Thanks for pointing that out, luckily we had just pulled over to take pictures. This is the Gorge that runs parallel to the tarn (with the vulture sanctuary). Much quieter and a great road

  3. Cant help, you could have stayed here for a night (near Brive..) no pool and not flash!

I can help with avoiding some motorway (though the A20 is not bad)

    This,

IMG_0946.png the D940 is a really good road. Long fast sweepers and scenic.

  6. Just called, the restaurant is fully booked tomorrow night. Curses.

  7. Just booked the next two nights, so am all done. I’ll stick a list of the hotels I’ve stayed at on here at some point, all have been great so far.

  11. As promised, here's a list of the places I stayed at......

Night 1 - Folkestone B&B - https://www.pigeonwood.com/ - this place is about 5-10 minutes from the tunnel, is a lovely farmhouse with plenty of safe parking for the bike. And Mary does a cracking full English to set you up for the day!

Night 2 - North West of Reims - https://www.theoriginalshotels.com/en/hotels/du-golf-de-l-ailette-laon-south - this is a very clean lakeside hotel (all rooms look onto the lake) with a great restaurant

Night 3 - Montrachet - https://hotel.olivier-leflaive.com/en/ - A very nice hotel with a fine dining restaurant. You'll need to book the restaurant a few weeks in advance, but there's a belting restaurant in the same town called the Hotel Le Montrachet, which the concierge said was even better than the food in the hotel. Judging by the great food and spectacular cheese board, I'm inclined to agree!

Night 4 & 5 - Gorge du Tarn - https://chateaudelacaze.com/en/ - Recommended by Guillaume on here, this place was stunning. Everything about this hotel was exceptional.

Nights 6 & 7 - Lauzerte - https://www.lebelvedere-lauzerte.com/ - This was a belting hotel. In the middle of the countryside, with spectacular views for miles. It has an amazing infinity pool, jacuzzis and sauna. Amazing food, cracking wine list, and just a great place to be.

Night 8 - North of Limoges - https://www.hotel-lorangerie23.fr/ - Set in a golf course, another great hotel with a good menu and wine list. More steak frites kind of fair rather than fine dining, but made a change after 6 nights of 8 course dinners!

Night 9 - Normandy - North East of Le Mans - https://www.domainedevilleray.com/en - This one was my favourite of the trip. Very tough to choose between this and Chateau De La Caze, but this just about pips it. Absolutely exceptional in every way. If you like somewhere traditional but grand, with a spa, fine dining restaurant, and an amazing wine list, this is the place for you. I will DEFINITELY be going back before the end of the summer.

Night 10 - St Omer - https://www.tilques.najeti.fr/en/ - I've stayed here before. The hotel is great, the restaurant is good, but the service wasn't brilliant. And the bastards closed the bar without telling anyone, so I could only have one brandy! They were probably having an off day, but I’d think twice about staying there again tbh.
