1200 DVT Dialling Out Excessive Brake Dive

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by The dogs, Dec 30, 2015.

  1. +1 on this point

I have the S model and have noticed that coming from a track set up sportsbike (very different and rock solid) that there is dive under braking, a tendency to oversteer through corners and a slight indication of wobble mid bend unless you are absolutely smooths going into bends.

I haven't had much chance to ride the DVT too much yet, but I've already changed the suspension setup for 2 up riding which has stiffened things up a bit but not resolved the handling points I note above.

I've now added front preload (5 turns via the manual adjuster on the right hand fork leg) which is approx half the adjustment available but haven't yet had a chance to test for any change.

Next steps for me are to experiment with more front preload and also to to change setup for 2 people and luggage. If that gets me roughly where I want to be their can try and fine tune from there.

The great thing with the multi is that you can make most of these changes in your preferred riding mode, so once I get it right it will be my personalised 'sports' setting.

  2. Something to note on the S-model
There is an exact 30 second window of time when the bike is first powered on (electronically powered) with the button that the compression/rebound valving in the shock/forks is completely open. This is the best time to set preload as the suspension can move freely to purely check spring preload with no interference. After this time is up the active valving locks on and compression/rebound valving settings are applied. You can note this immediately as the suspension become much harder to push through travel by pressing on it.

  3. Thanks for that, I'll have another play with it tomorrow

  4. If I understand correctly your issue is excessive front fork dive, right? Also if I understand correctly you must be about or less than 75kg because you mentioned 5 turns on the spring preload.
The issue can't be resolved by setting load for rider and passenger, actually you're worsening the ridability in this way. It may seem that the suspension gets stiffened but that's just because the bike thinks that you are adding extra load.
Instead you can choose one of the riding modes and modify the fork settings in one rider mode as I mentioned in my earlier post. No need to worry about loosing the settings, you can always set these back to default any time.
I also recommend to add an extra turn or 1,5 to the spring preload to ensure stiffness of the fork. I have mine set to 7 turns for 95kg although I am 82kg. Together with the setting of the damping and rebound to Harder I haven't experienced any excessive dive since then.

  5. Yep your right, about 75kg's

The 5 turns on the front preload made all the difference for me so far and made for a much better ride. Haven't been able to test any further or make more adjustments as I'm waiting for some warm dry days when I can push the bike through corners a bit more.

However, I'm now very happy with the ride and this has worked for me so far, a little more refinement will be applied in the spring.
