  3. And how many peolple here have really seen a broken magnesium wheel, except Nathanhu?
Not:i have been told by my neighbour that his uncle his brother has a collegue who heard about a broken magnesium wheel.
I have seen damadged alu wheels as well.
The magnesium wheels that had a bad reputation where the old speedlines i think they called.
It is true that you have to be a bit more carefull with magnesium wheels, the will brake faster instead of bending like a magnesium wheel.

    henk!!!

  4. I rolled the dice and decided to purchase the wheels. Thanks for everyone's input here, it was a very lively debate.

I'll let you guys know when they arrive!

  5. I've seen a few broken Mag's in person Henk over the last 40+ years, inc' a Campagnolo rim complete with still inflated tyre but NO spokes in the paddock of the '80 Bol dor, hung up for everyone to see it.
My still owned '79 900SS came with Speedlines that lasted less than 2 years.
So for these reasons I avoided Mag's until 2 years ago when I bought new 3 spoke Marvic's for my '92 851/955c, reasoning that they were "In Period", a lot better now than 40 years ago and extremely light, also figuring that now I'm a lot older I don't cover as many miles as I used to, so they should see me out.

  6. Does the cautionary advice given during the course of this thread apply to forged magnesium wheels also?

I’ve been offered some Oz Cattiva wheels for a decent price. They are claimed to be ex WSBK (Davide Giuliano - I had to Google him) Love the look of them but concerned about their durability.

I heard Dave Hewson very briefly mention the mileage he had on a set of wheels in a recent YouTube vlog, but he didn’t expand further.

  7. These wheels don't include bearings, which is fine. What do I need from this parts diagram?

    SBK998_USA_2002076.jpeg

I'm guessing qty (2) of part 8, qty (1) of part 9, and qty (1) of part 7.

Part 6 is described as "Seal ring (sarchesini only)" (note the typo!) so I assume it's not needed for Marvics?

  8. Walk away. Genuine ‘race’ wheels are life limited and are returned to the manufacturer for NDT (at around 1500km in the case of OZ IIRC) before being reused or melted for recycling. Andy

  9. That’s interesting and helpful to know. I knew they where coming off a track bike, but I was not aware the where full on race wheels until earlier today. Looking on the Oz website, they spec the Cattiva as for road use, but I guess they supply higher grade? “not for road use” kit to those worthy.

  10. My understanding is they use the name of the closest road approved equivalent as a marketing tool. I know the Piega R is marketed as for racing but you only need to look at the bikes they fit to realise there's a bit of licence used. Andy

  11. Hey Steve,
Like i said the early speedlines and indeed campagnolo had a bad reputation, even when they where new.
But i have not seen alot of marvic or magnesium wheels that have been treated well with problemes.
The lifespan and so seems just to be a problem in the motorbike world.
I know guys who drive magnesium vw and porsche wheels from 50-60 years old and nowbody there thinks about it if that might be a bad idea.
Some off these wheels are even not complete painted or have polished spokes,so no paint protection.

    Henk!!!

  12. I emailed Marvic (in proper English and poor Italian) to ask about the color codes and refinishing. A few days later I got this reply, which I thought was useful enough to want to share it:

Hope this helps someone down the road!
