  3. i would recommend a male and deffo no working breads.
we are the GSD and wolf bread type. i would go for a German Sheppard all day long. easy to train dont take up that much space.
a good Heinz variety would be cheep, if not free, healthy and loyal.

  4. Yes. Male for first dog much less bother. Also Heinz makes a lot of sense. Agree :upyeah:

  5. Yeah as @finm mentioned , had 3 german shepherds over the years. Sam, Jess and Kurt. Sam was a vegetarian :D:D but all great dogs.

  7. We've taken 4 Staffy Rescue bitches, and can't comment on other dogs. Our kids and grandkids have grown up with them.

They're a family dog who love company, are known for being good with kids, don't shed much hair, don't need 5 mile walks. Much maligned due to idiot owners.

Our current rescue cost £200 14 days ago, but is neutered, vaccinated, wormed, de-flea'd and Vet assessed for that. Plus Rescue give you a months free insurance, and will take her back if you change your mind.

  8. So true

  9. aye, our German Sheppard Jake (current curled up under the table with the cat sleeping on top of him) is a veggy. we had a white bitch before called hoorra.
well trained, but ferk me, was she moody.

  10. Bedlington terriers are sweet dogs but need special, low-copper food due to a breeding defect. Non-shedders and not too big.

I would get a rescue, a 57-varieties type though. I hate the thought of funding puppy farms and the intensive breeding practices associated with breeds is horrible. They are meant to be our best friends and we breed them into dysfunctional monstrosities.

  13. Exactly.....

  14. Sausage is just to small. I'm over 6'1" so would look stupid.

Would love a rescue, mine was when I was a kid, but family want a big eyed puppy.

Begal would cost to much in fags.

    Yorkie is a good shout.

    Edit: sorry westie.

  15. @Cream_Revenge

We got our short haired golden working cocker, Iggy, at exactly 8 weeks old, then the 3.5 months we’ve had since him makes him about 5.5 months old now.

Every cocker I’ve ever met has been a bit bonkers, but in a really endearing way. It’s basically like living with Tigger.

It’s true that cockers have got a big engine and can go all day if need be, so they require a lot of exercise, but Iggy can also just as happily spend a whole weekend in his crate in our room so long as we are in there with him too.

They’re a very affectionate breed, which can make them quite clingy but seeing as the girlf and I WFH most of the time even before lockdown, that wasn’t a problem. He does not like being left on his own at all, so will cry and bark until you return, at which point he pees himself with excitement.

Based on my experience, I’d say that a cocker wouldn’t make a good choice if you’re going to be leaving him on his own much (your post said “company most of the time”) as they’re kind of needy. That said, if may just be that Iggy has been spoiled by us and also we live in a terraced cottage and didn’t want to upset the neighbours, we couldn’t leave him to bark himself out.

A couple of people have commented that a working cocker wouldn’t make a good first dog. Iggy is our first dog, and, what’s more, we went all in by getting a KC registered pedigree pup from impeccable gun dog stock, which doesn’t always mean they’ll make good pets as working dogs need a lot of mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. We paid almost twice as much for him as other breeders were asking, but while my spidey senses had been tingling when speaking to most of the advertisers on Pets4Homes and similar sites, I got a good vibe from the breeder I chose. It’s been a lot of work but then I imagine puppies of any breed will be boisterous and disobedient, and it’s even been quite testing at times - for example climbing in clean washing basket and peeing on all the clean clothes is a habit I won’t miss. I’d say a cocker is doable as a first dog, but you will need to devote a LOT of time to them, and also I might be eating your words once Iggy’s balls drop and he starts getting full of himself. Watch this space.

Overall, the past 3.5 months watching him grow from a cute little manic fur ball towards becoming a young confident and (slightly) calmer dog have given us some of the most moving and rewarding times of our lives.
