It might be normal for certain brands. if had Michelin Pilot Powers for donkey's. No worrying moments.
My question really is, is it normal for a motorcycle tyre to wear down so suddenly? .............. Depends on the type of tyres i suppose, they will all have different characteristics, and another big factor is engine configuration , Vee twins are known for tyre shreading torque at low down revs .....bigger pulses per cycle , were as a inline 4 has smaller pulses but more per engine cycle , see this alot on the modern turbo diesel cars with vnt turbos mega torque at very low down revs .....rips tyres to bits .
I'm not entirely sure there was anything sudden about it, although it's difficult to explain in words. You're wearing a flat surface into a curve, so although the tread either side still looks reasonable, the centre section is probably already through to minimum, especially given what little tread was there in the first place is thinner than the rest of the tyre. Hopefully that makes sense?
"My question really is, is it normal for a motorcycle tyre to wear down so suddenly? If that is normal then fine, lesson learnt, next time I will get the tyres replaced within a week, and not within a month!" I've seen the exact same happen quite a few times over the years......... "My wear strips probably reached their end early to mid May!" Not sure I'm understanding what you're saying there but when the wear bars/strips are flush with the surface of the tyre anywhere you're running the risk of the tyre being illegal (dependant on what percentage of the tyre is worn to that extent). If you're saying you'd worn some of the wear bars/strips away altogether, well....as you've found out, there is bugger all rubber left and you'll very quickly be through to the carcass.
Life is a learning curve. One thing i have learnt is do not scrimp on tyres and brakes in particular. Both are vital for your safety and saving perhaps a few pounds can turn out to be a very very false economy.
The difficulty is identifying the wear bars, they aren't obvious and the fact there is no tread to gauge across the center of the tyre doesn't help. I am very fussy about rubber (!) but this has happened to me also.
So went to Feltham tyres at lunch time today for a new set of rubber! Despite ordering them in they had not yet arrived grrr grrr nuisance grumble grumble! On the way home stopped in at hgb tyres! They had a set on the shelf and were 60quid cheaper ( thank you mr courier for not delivering to Feltham tyres on time) PR3's fitted and balanced for a paltry £265 for the pair! First 40miles of tyre scrubbing completed too! It's good to have decent rubber again!
Guys just to clarify the min 1mm has to be on the centre 3/4 of the tyre with visible tread on the rest not any 3/4. So say the tyre tread width was 100mm it would mean the central 75mm measured from the centre outwards.
