  2. Has anyone else noticed the deliberate error in the title of this thread.....
.....I don't do halves (real men don't), either give me a full one or I'm going home.

  6. seems fair.

  7. You have made it crystal clear that your position is absolutely draconian: one single molecule of alcohol in your body and you get a life ban. Since everyone would fail on that basis, I trust you will be the first person to get the ban you advocate.

  8. ive been dry for 10yrs bar a pint at xmas and can medically prove it via docs so wouldnt get banned...
as for molecules from anything else,no idea, but i can currently pass the random tests we get on site anytime.
    heheheh.

  9. Ethanol is a naturally occurring substance and tiny amounts of it are found in all sorts of things, including human bodies. Testing techniques get more and more sensitive all the time. I would be willing to bet quite a lot of money that there is a small but detectable amount of ethanol* in your body right now. You have stated that in your view zero means absolutely zero - so be it, that's you banned.

  10. Risk Assessments are not black and white, the idea being to reduce risks to ALARP, and I would draw your attention to the letter R for Reasonably. Then to proceed if, and only if, that risk is deemed acceptable. Risk Assessments are are not about removing all risk.

Employers have every right, and should insist, that their employees are not under the influence of alcohol whilst at work and particularly whilst operating machinery.

Whilst driving after one pint of beer does increase the chance of an accident experience tells us that it isn't a highly increased chance, it goes from minimal to ever so slightly above minimal, there is nothing inevitable about it.

  11. must admit i go to the extreme and work back, but quarrying has been extremely bad for accidents over the years and the simplest error has often been fatal.

i spose in offices etc there would be lot less to worry about.
my freinds an offshore welder/diver(underwater welding) and they operate black n white procedure as well so guess its relative to industry.

theres still no reasonable risk if life is involved, this being my personal level of risk assesment not a companies insurance liability level.

  12. The final decision is black or white, proceed or do not proceed, and if there is risk to life then you would only proceed in exceptional circumstances when there is absolutely no other option.

    But.

Driving after a pint just isn't anywhere remotely close to that scenario.

  13. every ones different i guess, i really can feel quite pissed after a pint. (this isn't a judgement by the way) was always the norm for the journeymen to go out at lunch, two or three quick ones and a pie.

  14. I remember when working in Govan shipyard the local bars were ten deep every lunch time !! don't actually remember any alchohol / drink related incidents

  15. Pete1950 is correct . Everybody produces alcohol as a normal process of living , some more than others , and it can be affected by what you would eat and your bodily function .The human body produces its own supply of alcohol naturally on a continuous basis, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s called endogenous ethanol production. If zero alcohol meant zero then no one would be allowed to drive at all .
Even the teetotal copper telling someone to blow in the bag has an alcohol content in his blood which could make himself more likely to fail than the drinker depending on his metabolism and health.

  16. I'm sure that had anyone said don't drive / ride while pissed up, 1950 would argue as to the degree of pissed up.

  17. Cba to read the thread so has anyone pointed out that halving the limit to the Scottish would still be treble that of the rest of the world? :)

  18. BTW This topic reminded me of an incident that happened quite recently.

About 30 years ago, my brother was arrested for driving while being under the influence of alcohol.
He was duly brought to Chiswick Police station where he provided them with a urine sample, then after being allowed to sleep it off overnight he was released to appear before magistrates on an appointed day.
On his way out of the nick he spotted his sample sitting on a shelf, the Policemen were rather busy with a rowdy "guest", which left my brother unescorted; to which he pocketed the sample and left.

In the ensuing years he hadn't heard anything from either the police or the CPS etc; that was until last week, when after 30 years they arrived at his house with a warrant for his arrest.........

He had been charged with Taking the piss!
