848 Dropped My 848

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Helen, Aug 11, 2022.

  1. Yes indeed, it cuts deep when you see your pride and joy looking so shabby.
Fear not, we have all done it (at least once o_O) and will rally round to help you out.

  2. Just had a look… not deep gouges.. just scratched. I’m not experienced in doing any touch up jobs on a bike, although I am an artist, so can you suggest if this process needs any type of filler beforehand and can you fine sand the fairing?

  3. To this day I stare down at my sidestand to make sure its where its suppose to be. Hope you get it sorted'

  5. a true paint specialist will hopefully post, but from doing this in the past, again, because it's matt, if you manage to match the paint well you could simply but carefully/repeatedly build it up with the top coat (i.e. - no filler needed unless really deep) and then depending how visible the blemishes are, you could lightly flat it down with fine wet and dry before building again.
Not a paid professional, but have done this dozens of times over the years, and always easier with matt. :upyeah:

  6. Bad luck Helen, but as it's been said - we've all done it. Some of us, several times.

Dont go thru insewerance. Fix it yourself. Get bits n bobs off ebay. Check your lockstop too.

  7. Brilliant… happy to give it a go then as I’m a perfectionist!

  8. I think artist and perfectionist could work here. If it turns out any good you have a lot of potential clients on this forum.....:D

  9. Thanks for that… yup safe to say I’ll be doing it myself after out my excess is over £1k!! Apologies for my ignorance but what do you mean by lockstop??

  10. You could employ the old Hire Car trick - we used to rely on those massive packs of felt pens that the kids took on holiday to keep them amused…came in handy to colour match any marks when returning the car…

  11. I just did the same to my 888. I just did touch-up paint and built it up above the scratch level and then after 2 days of curing/hardening I sanded back using wet and dry 1000 grit, then 1500 grit and 2000 grit. Certainly takes the eye away from the areas and only I know they are there, unless I fess-up!!!!

Final tip, take the panel off and re-touch with it lying as flat as possible on a surface.

  12. Brilliant advice… exactly what I was looking for thank you!!

  13. Get a replica lever off eBay until a genuine one comes up, I’ve bought dozens over the years for many different bikes and never had a failure. Then touch those scratch’s in with a small brush and some matt black paint. Halfords do a matt black in a rattle can. When you find a genuine panel comes up then replace it .

  14. Note that those levers fit many different bikes -749/999/848/1098/1198/M1100 plus probably some Panis and Multis.

  15. The lockstop is a tang that is located central to the downtube on frame that the yolks go thru. It can get bent with a drop. it sets how far left/right you can turn your steering. If you look through fairing to the top of the lower yoke from either side, you will see some adjuster screws. This is a lockstop on a 999, couldnt find an 848 pic.

  16. @Sev - aren't you going to add some advice? just so you can see it repeated using slightly different words over the next coming weeks? :)

  17. Many moons ago as a spotty youth, I used to wear Frank Thomas paddock boots (ankle length boots with laces) while riding my RD50, yep I was so cool. And yes, one day the laces caught on the footpeg, effectively trapping my leg as I slowly toppled over with no way to stop myself. Even worse, right outside the local supermarket and bus stop, so plenty of people to enjoy my predicament. I still have flashbacks to this day! Can you even say you are a biker unless you have experienced similar? ;)

    Good luck with the repairs!
