Dropped The Bike Today !!!

  1. Bad luck ...shit happens man ! bungee strap.com needed

  2. I spent a fair bit of time trying to contrive a way of bonding or gluing the broken bits back together with strengthening metal, but it's not really feasible to get it strong enough for practical use. Eventually I was forced to buy the new component [it's called a "Tail guard (bottom) LH and RH" in the parts catalogue] and fit it. What is feasible and I have done, is to bond some strengthening material to the new component before you start using it, to reduce the chances of it breaking again. All this is rather a pfaff.

  3. If the bike falls over, something has to give...and usually break. If it wasn't this part it would be another.

  4. Did the same thing with a beautiful blue V-rod a few years bac. Rolled up outside hotel in Nimes, France looking all mean, moody and cool, kick out the sidstand and get off, C R A S H. Snapped an indicator off. Didin't look so cool gaffer taped back on. :-( And neither did I having to be helped to pick the fecker back up again! :-( Kinda Funny in retrospect though!

  5. Cheers guys. can laugh about it now to be honest. One of those things that happens when you don't concentrate.
I decided to start putting it out whilst in 1st gear so it cut the engine and I knew it was out properly. A little back up for just in case.
But the good news is it's not as bad as first though. Looking at the online fiches on the iPhone it looked like the whole tail section that was needed. But speaking to Harry at DG today it now looks like just the LHS plastic part I need which is a major relief. The pannier lid and mirror I'm sure will flatten down with some elbow grease and then it's the pride after than.
At the time it felt like the end of the world but now I'm home and relaxed I can see the funny side of it.
My mate only seen the legs in the air and backwards roll during my feable attempt to stop it going over and catapulting me off the side.
Pics of how I expect the damage to look like once I get my bike home and stripped. Spotted a damaged one on Ebay today.

  6. Correct. The plastic part helpfully has some strengthening metal cast into it at the top (where the two holes are where it's bolted to the rear subframe). But it stupidly has no strengthening where the panniers sit, which is where it breaks.

  7. Think I would be trying to strengthen that in the pannier sitting area in some way before I refit it...

  8. totally irrelevant but better to have week spot on the pannier than the frame.

  9. I'm with Fin on this one. Always better to have a weaker part for give.
Something has to give when they go.
At the end of the day we chose hidden supports for a reason. They look so much better. Yes a GS with the fugly frame might have got away with no marks but they need to drive around with the frame on most of the time of they don't want panniers.

  10. Oddly enough the protrusions on the pannier that sit in those holes are very strong and apparently unbreakable - different grade of plastic.

  11. unbreakable. Now theres a challenge :D

Reminds me of years ago my cousin being given a tonka lorry for christmas (anyone remember them - advertised as being rough & tough & unbreakable).
It was in bits before lunch time :)

  12. I have used this product with success to repair and strengthen plastic. Very easy to use, tear off a small piece and push into the area you require repairing/ strengthening, and leave for an hour or so to harden.[IMG]

  13. Did exactly the same myself in a French petrol station when the bike had less than 1k miles. Side stand wasn't quite forward enough. The plastic plate at the back of the pannier mount had been punched out and proved a beggar to fix. Tried gluing on a couple of occasions but gave up in the end. The damaged bit is easy enough to get on and off though.
The pannier just moves a little bit on its mounting now but it's no big deal.
The bigger problem was the u shaped flap punched in the pannier lid. Pushed it back in place with a bit of superglue and hey presto! Fixed. Done two fully laden European tours now with no problems or water leakage. Isn't worth fixing to be honest and will only be an issue when I come to sell.

  14. I brought a L/H Tail Guard from Ducati Aylesbury, my local dealer, for £106.04 (inc. VAT). It took a week or so for them to get it and I picked it up. So the list price isn't too bad.

I also checked out the price on the www.kfm-motorraeder.de site: R/H Tail Guard
Delivery seems to be a standard 15 Euro to the UK, so 129,53 Euro delivered, £ rate depending how you pay. I've used them before for one order of various bits and pieces with no problems.

    Hope this helps,

  15. Thank you Steve. Have you fitted it yourself or got the garage to do it for you (if yes what price to expect to pay for this)? I guess it is few hours of labour. I have the worksop DVD so it shouldn't be too difficult ... I hope.

  16. I fitted it myself - not too difficult. You have to remove the "side panel" or at least be able to swing it out of the way, and you have to remove the screws for the under seat storage/grab rail. Also when you undo the screws holding the tail guard the "mudguard" drops down - so support it on some old towels on the rear wheel. It's an ideal time to change the number plate bulb for an LED type and even the rear indicators for LED type, see separate thread. It takes a couple of hours as you'll want to clean bits before re-assembly.

  17. I once had a female tenant who's tinker boyfriend was called tonka....as a child he used to break them.
After his 7 year stretch for robbery he went into the scrap business.

  18. The rear right hand tail guard costs £88.37+VAT...source ProTwins Godstone.

  19. Thank you Paul
