well I also like the 748R but have read that it isn't the most reliable and appears to be a money pit lol. Think it will be a 996 or 998 now ) Looking for a beuty. Any mint ones on here for sale at a good price )))
Id go for a 996 personally like I did. I was tempted with a 998 as they arnt that much more but they have different bodywork & engine and as id always wanted a 996 thats what I went for. I used to have a 748S, albeit 13 years back, and I find power & performance wise, the 996 seems a lot better to me. I sold my 748 for an R1 (which i still have) so whilst I cant compare them back to back now, I can use the R1 as a benchmark. The 996 feels twice as heavy as the R1 and twice as slow, but the riding experience is perfect. You can give it some beans when you want, or poodle about on it for a lazy ride out. The only thing I would say with the 996 is that you need to alter the mental gearing. Change the front sprocket to drop the gearing down a bit - think i dropped 1 tooth on mine, and that made it much easier to ride. There are a few 996`s out there, but it may take a while. I saw some right dogs when I was looking and whilst originally I wanted a 996S i went for a 996BIP as the right one came up. It needed some work, but I factored that into the purchase price. Even so, I ended up spending about 2k more than I wanted as the seller wouldnt budge on the price an inch.
Looks a nice tidy 996 with some great extras. If its been serviced by JHP (decal) above headlight it will be a good un. Might be worth upgrading the brake calipers next time its in for work to brembo p4's.Especialy if you plan on a fair bit of two up riding.A big improvement for little money via fleabay. Enjoy.
P4/34 calipers are very good and they can be found also on KTM's and Aprilias, they go on eBay for a lot less if they have not been on a Ducati. I made the change on my 748R engined 748S and they were a real improvement. Mine came from a KTM and they were a lot less than getting 748R etc. ones.
well its £6000 but have original parts except wheels but I just purchased a original set for an sps off ebay ) in mint condition.
Thats not bad at all, my standard 996 set me back about £5600 by the time id finished servicing it, fitting single seat etc.
Had my 748R for ten years, fit an Ultimap chip and +3 on the rear sprocket. Best bike I have ever owned. Belts every two years and I'm on my second clutch (16,000 miles)
