Ducati 848 No Start

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by HardKnockLife, Jul 17, 2018.

  1. Do you mean the pc didn't survive in the Triumph?
    Reversed polarity?

  2. Phone typing. ON triumph. Ie any drop in battery condition would simply not allow the bike to turn over, it just ‘clicks’.

848 was different. Drop in voltage just meant it tried and failed to turn over, I never had te clicking sound.

On the gixer I am putting back together, I charged battery and put on just to make sure motor will spin after last years off. Nothing on the button, like the kill switch was off. So put the PC connections back on and it spun no problem (didn’t try to start, just turn over). Hence questions regarding PC, in case Op forgot to add the power leads when replacing battery or it’s not earthed properly.

Key test would be direct power to starter, make sure that works. Iirc from a spray issue I had on an old fire blade, it would spin and whir but not start??

  3. I was asking OP if he had reversed polarity and blown something.

My bike is ok or dead and in bits!

  4. Not connected to the rough running but to the situation now maybe.

Double check the power commander connections. I had a similar issue as all the leads on my power commander were black and I didn't take enough notice when disconnecting them which one went where.

Basically I reversed the polarity on the power commander leads which turns the injectors on and dumps loads of fuel into the cylinders. It hydro locked the motor and all I got was a click. If it let it stand for a day I would get a partial turn over then locked again. Once I realised the problem with the leads I took out the plugs and turned it over and expelled the fuel and all was fine.

Might not be your problem but seemed similar.

  5. I meant did you reverse the polarity and if that killed your pc

  6. No. I didn’t. I simply didn’t connect it (wasn’t tryung to start it just spin over)

  7. Yes, it would take a little and sputter but once started it would idle fine. Now it is a single click from the solenoid.

  8. Has the new battery got plenty of life in it ? I know it’s a silly question -

  9. Does sound a battery issue.

  10. Either battery or a duff relay. Would not be the first time a relay "click"s but no power to the starter. Check for 12v across the starter motor when you hit the button.

    Will it bump start?

  11. Check battery voltage is >12.7v across the battery terminals before doing anything like switching on the ignition. If the solenoid is clicking your starter switch circuit is working suggesting the solenoid is fecked (having this intermittently on my 748 this week, £34 from Moto Rapido delivered this morning). Take a heavy gauge wire from the battery + terminal direct to the solenoid to starter motor terminal, if the motor spins your solenoid is the problem. Be prepared for some arcing when you short it as it will take a bunch of amps

  12. Will try a new battery tomorrow morning.

  13. I checked for 12v and it read what was on the hud as well. No it will not turn over

  14. I’m getting 12.5v, you’re saying bridge it from the solenoid + to the starter?

  15. Or directly from the battery to (bypass solenoid) to starter? Thanks

  16. Also check the small crimp connector to the ecu.

  17. Bridge the 2 big terminals on the solenoid that will eliminate the solenoid

  18. Search YouTube for ‘bridging starter’ or something like that if you don’t know what it is. There’s nearly always a video for these things.

  19. Denzel is the man and I agree with the course of action, try bridging out the solenoid or if you have a something like a jumper cable you can try Denzel's suggestion

It will be sparky sparky and a bit disconcerting if you haven't done it before

Nobody has yet mentioned Ducati's shit power cables and the fact they degrade badly making a bad situation worse.

@Exige has a kit for this and it's worth investing in it

  20. Separate battery and jump leads would be my option. It’s far easier all round
