I was given a "warranty certificate" when I paid for the warranty in the dealers, the end date was three years after the start date rather than two. I do not expect to receive anything further.
just to wade in here guys, as my bike looks like needs the "heads" replacing ... the warranty have/have not is now a no brainer its a must have. to put into some prespective - and I am still awaiting the diagnosis/cure from the dealer and whether the actual warranty claim will go through - on the US forum some are saying that the heads are going at around 16K miles...no matter which year of the bike. they are also saying that the cost to fix is around 3.5K GBP. not sure how much a new dashboard and a new radiator costs...but those havent failed on my bike yet... anyway...my point is that I think the only way to continue with ownership of my MTS is to have a warranty - maybe from some third party - as I simply cant take the risk of the thing blowing up in yr 4 or 5.... so is there an alternative that would potentially cover the things we KNOW are going wrong : Heads Dash Brake Radiator etc... ?
Dropped into Riders Bridgewater on the way past. Showed him receipt and he checked on his system but couldnt tell me if warranty was in place. Apparently they are going to call Ducati UK and come back to me. (waits by phone...) God knows how you guys manage to get anything sorted when major defects occur. I'm going to sell the bike before the extended warranty runs out.
From where did you buy the extended warranty? I bought mine from Ducati Aylesbury (OYB) and they handed me a warranty certificate there and then, I have checked the T&C and that says you need to present the warranty booklet to a dealer to get warranty service. Maybe my experience is not typical.
Just paid for and picked up my warranty certificate from Ducat Glasgow. No issues at all, excellent service as always. Just the horrendous wind noise to sort now.
bought from Riders Bridgewater. In fairness Billy rang me back to say he couldnt get hold of Ducati and he has passed to Lee to call this week. I will be passing again next Thursday so if I havent heard I will make my fourth visit.

They called me back 3 times after taking my money saying Ducati changed the system so I needed to supply email and other information for it to be registered correctly. Anyway got receipt and cert through the post a couple of days later, good service I would say.
just following on from previous post...received post-mortem Front cylinder head is 'porous' - needs replacing....3 yr warranty covers it. awaiting parts. few interesting things to pass on : dealer was very concerned, really informative, had raised with ducati dealer confirmed happened on one or two bikes I asked what about the rear head-he said he would ask if ducati would replace both - I said at least 'record' it so that when warranty runs out it can be replaced foc. getting parts and fix will take 2-3 weeks - I asked for dealer to contact ducati about offering some kind of loan bike as I use the bike for commuting etc...(i see some people here took 7 weeks?) another interesting point was that when I said about rear cyclinder going after warranty period he confirmed that if ducati know that its a common fault (ie. I can produce some evidence) then they usually replace/fix the issue - this is good news for the potential dash and radiator failure which I havent experienced yet... bugs
Bugs, good luck with Ducati replacing expensive parts out of warranty, what usually happens is that you 'might' get parts at cost, or a contribution to the retail cost, and you will have to pay the labour to have the work done. and only if you have a fully dealer stamped up service book. this is common in the motor industry as a whole.
This is what happened with mine at 22K miles back in May 2012, What is a porous head? Never got an answer to that question. The dealer / Ducati changed out both heads and I strongly recommend that you push to have both heads replaced. It is an engine out job but once the parts were in it was done in 3 days in my case.
Hi Bugs You must insist to replace your rear head (I know two cases here in Greece that the dealer replace only the faulty one and two weeks later ). Now they replace both. And yes for common faults the ducati covers you after warranty period but not the cost of labor... and the cost of labor for replacing heads is very big, because the engine must get down of the frame in order to replace the rear head. Here in Greece I don't know not one multi that pasts 35000km without replacing the heads My multi is 2 months out of warranty and the generator failed, ducati covers the part but not the labor... Sorry for my bad english
update : spoke to dealer. ducati say that they will only replace the faulty component and will not guarantee any other work - so they say only replace one cylinder, if the issue re-occurs they may consider a goodwill gesture (as you guys said) - and I doubt this covers labour. said that this is not acceptable as from discussions on the forums it looks like both heads have been replaced in the past and if they are not the issue does happen, my 3 year warranty is running out and I dont want to run a vehicle that has a manufacturing fault with it especially after I have had the first symptom, and there are other owners who have experienced the same fault. I also explained that I am posting my progress of how ducati is dealing with this issue on the forum for other owners. bugs
It looks like the coolant that Ducati has been using in it's engines has not been protecting the engine metals from corrosion, hence the leaking heads and the recent recall to change the type of coolant used. If that is the case, then ALL of the bikes from production start will be affected to some degree, the damage will remain unseen untill it is too late, eventually failing. Any bike out of warranty when this happens will be worthless. It saddens me really that after all these years Ducati still make what is a basic engineering mistake, and sell bikes that could be brilliant, but are allways flawed in some respect. I almost replaced my 1000 Multi when the 1200 came out, so glad i did'nt now.
update again fyi Ducati have confirmed they will replace both heads - not just one which is great news. However there will be a delay in getting the parts from italy - mid nov - thats another 6 weeks to wait - say plus labour that is going to take until start dec - in summary bike will have been off the road from 2.5 months. Not sure what the delay is from italy, glad to get it sorted properly. This has severly knocked my confidence, apologies to all if it has any of you also, the good news is that ducati uk seem to be responsive and my dealer is working to get it sorted. I still consider the bike and the brand to be great and I think sharing these experiences is part of the ownership experience, the verdict is out on what happens after with my MTS - I am one of the first 2010 buyers of the bike, stuck lots of bits on, have more plans, and really have loved the bike and brand so far and I guess am going to see what other owners do as they go into 3rd/4th year ownership and being out of warranty, i think moving brands to a lesser/compromise is like going from a having a stationary/sometimes running ferrari to a running ford focus and I will regret it... bugs
EDIT: didn't see your last post before mine Bugs!.............pleased for you Crazy Harry.....I know that there was talk of the 'wrong' coolant being used some time back when there was a spate of failed radiators although ultimately the radiator failures proved to be due to design/manufacturing faults with the internal components of the radiators. In this day and age is there such a thing as the 'wrong' coolant that can cause damage?! Do bikes come from the factory with the coolant system filled or is this something done at PDI? "recent recall to change the type of coolant used" ....is there an actual recall documented somewhere? I think your concerns re the rear cylinder head are justified............get written confirmation of the diagnosed fault with the front head from your Dealer, write to DUk and Ducati HQ Italy stating your concerns. This is a 'fault' that's been documented going back more than 12 months, clearly either a failing in the manufacture process of a batch of (or all??!! ) cylinder heads or down to the use of inappropriate coolant - either way the 'not fit for use' argument works and owners should not end up out of pocket even after expiry of the warranty period imho (why should owners be penalised for not having done enough mileage within the warranty period for a design fault to have exhibited??!!!)
Bugs, Glad you are getting both heads replaced. Like you I am flying an early 2010 and am now worried that: my radiator hasn't failed, my heads have not dissolved, my instrument panel isn't playing up. On June 13th 2013 I could be a worried man! Or not, my glass is half full. Surely these problems only effected a small %? Pleased it's not put you off the bike and I have to say I think Ducati are pretty good at looking after "issues." I even had a few things corrected on my last Ducati when it was outside the warranty (sidestand and front brake). Am I being too optimistic?
Not necessarily the 'wrong' sort of coolant, just one that does not have the correct inhibitors mixed in. Antifreeze is rarely needed to prevent the coolant freezing up in our climate, more important are the inhibitors to prevent corrosion caused by the electrolytic affect of water and all the different types of metal found in modern engines. years ago a mix of 15-25% was common, now 33-50% is the norm, any more than 50% though starts to reduce the cooling capability of the liquid as it becomes less fluid. An engine run on just water could be scrap after a couple of years.
Just an update on why my Extended Warranty hasnt been issued since buying it in Feb. Apparently they have now found out that you have to buy the warranty from the same dealer who sold you the bike. That could prove difficult as it was george White who went bust. They are trying to get it cleared with Ducati UK and Italy. Great at building bikes.....the rest....very poor.
