1000 Ducati Multistrada 1000ds Starting Issues

  1. Someone put black tar like sealent around the tank and i found some of it in the fuel filter, I blew it out and a blob went on the floor. I had to scrub that stuff off my hands so if it went into the fuel pump game over. Once revved as the bike has to catch up with it's self to be revved again I'm sumizing that the fuel pump isn't keeping the pressure up needed to fuel the engine. It just seems logical. Would the return get blocked? I can buy a new pump for £28 but what about the return? How do I check that or is it a bit far fetched for it to be blocked?

  2. Just a final probably stupid question but which hose is in and which is out? Just in case I'm stupid and put them on the wrong way. When you look towards the middle of the fuel tank you have a left and right one. Which is which?

  3. The black tar substance could be melted/degraded internal fuel hose

  4. It's pasted all around seal it's more deliberate then sproradic. I think he's had a leak. He's put it either side of the rubber seal and I think that's contaminated the fuel. I've ordered a fuel pump and I'm going to change the fuel filter. We'll see what happens, if it's not this then I have no idea. TPS potentially. It'll have to get plugged in.

  5. I have a really silly question but it keeps going through my mind. How much fuel do you need in the bike to run it. I put around 3 litres in it just to get it started. Is this enough without potentially starving it? Have I not been putting enough fuel in it? The fuel pump mechanisms raise quite high in the tank. Was thinking maybe the fuel is too low to get to the pump effectively? Just spit balling. I might be doing something silly.

  6. on the 1000 fugly, it's not unusual for you to fill the tank up till it clicks, you ride off, it shows full straight away but after a mile it shows half a tank. There was a design issue in the 1000 tank that I believe was rectified on the 1100 fugly. I think it was also to do with a venting issue so air stopped a certain amount of fuel going in but showed as a full tank

I found filling the tank slowly whilst sitting on the bike gently shaking the bike took the worst of the problem out. I seem to remember the fuel tank is a 20 litre? tank and wriggly, jiggling and slowly filling got me close to that most times.
Do a search on 1000 fuel gauge and you will find other peoples mentions and suggestions
