And I suppose whoever buys it gets a V5 for a genuine 'R', so can build it back up as one if they choose. Not the easiest way to get one, or the cheapest, but when demand outstrips supply.
This section caught my eye: "If we now focus on more of the cockpit area of this bike once again there are a few little special features that are only visible on early versions of the 916. One of the most visible of these special features is the slightly curved text on the small instrument cluster, this was only visible on the first 500 or so bikes." Anyone know what they're referring to? I really don't want to go back to the Varese thread...
The white writing below the idiot lights was in an arc following the radius of the light on the very early ones. This was later followed by the white lettering in a straight line.
Someone has clearly put a lot of effort into the auction with all that text and over 100 pictures. I think the curved writing he refers to is about 8 rows down in the pics and is around turn, neutral, fuel lights etc. I have no idea if that is genuine (or whether someone has put it on sometime after). This certainly has a whiff about it though "It may be Italian folk law, but it is said that these earlier Cagiva built 916’s were breathed on slightly by the motorsport department as they were destined for dealers in Europe to use as demonstrators. If this is true this would explain why this particular 916 rides in such a strong manner today, it is more than capable of keeping up with any type of traffic."

By the looks of things it also has those very rare early black cable ties located in the brake lever area.
