engine blown

  1. what warranty do you get with a new ducati ?

  3. 2 years on a new i think , you could try to speak to dealer about it but if its out of warranty there under no obligation to do anything apart from a good will gesture ...... id be very surprised if you get anywhere im afraid

I hope you're wrong, not just for Chris's sake but for Ducati..........assuming there is no issue with the way the bike has been used and maintained I think they would be foolish not to do the right thing and repair foc - if not there would be a lot of potential buyers of Ducs that might think twice!
     
  5. I'd think Ducati would be wise to take a look at that engine. Sudden catastrophic failure is unusual. I'd want to look at that part from an engineering perspective if I were them.

  6. I would have thought that's beyond economic repair, IMHO. A hole in the casings like that usually means a new engine.

    Its a crap place to be in, my Tuono did a similar thing, so i know how you must be feeling. How long have you owned the bike, Chris?
     
  7. Ducati /audi ............they dont want to know about warranty issues on some of there shite design faulted audi diesel and petrol engines and how large is the market of cars compared to bikes
     
  8. Good luck mate I really feel four you, keep us posted but I hate to say I don't think that your going to get much luck from a dealer or Ducati as it's out of warranty.
     
  9. I thought there was a law in this country that overrides the standard 3 year warrantee (which is bollox) as all new machines(car, bike etc) should last a certain amount of miles.? 14k is feck all!

I work for an insurance company who carry out building work, I'm a builder and we give a years warranty however If something doesn't last it's life expectancy then we would sort this out as it should last its life expectancy, the engine clearly hasn't therefore I can't see the difference with a bike, car etc. However my mate's Suzuki Hayabusa blew the engine due to a lack of oil (constant 100mph plus wheelies for over a mile believe it or not) and Suzuki only paid part of the repair, they did inspect as an engine had never gone before with so little miles, this does give hope to the concerned. Keep us posted after your call tomorrow.
     
  11. Read the Sale of Goods Act 1994. 6 years it should last for. Dealer serviced, no engine mods (insurance get out). You should not pay for the replacement parts/engine if shown to be a metal part failure etc.

  12. I would not touch it any further yourself and instead get your dealer to inspect and report their findings. Was it purchased from Dealer or Private? Did it have full documentation on all servicing/history? The dealer will be able to download a lot of data on the bike. If all looks OK on servicing, etc and they decline then take up with Ducati UK technical rep directly.

    Put in writing that that although out of warranty, the engine should not have failed in this manner and advise that you would expect Ducati UK to repair/replace FOC. If there is no recognisable issues in the bikes history then in my experience, DUK have been very good at dealing with issues. Good luck with it.

    Plan B - Find an engine from a write off, then split the old engine so that you can sell the undamaged parts.

  13. I agree with Kirky's post above, don't do anything more to it except get it to a dealer, explain that you would not expect an engine to fail at this mileage and see where you go. I would be very surprised if you get turned down flat.

    Dont get edgy or threaten legal action but be aware that There have been lots of examples where individuals have taken car manufacturers on following out of warranty failures on the basis that the parts should have lasted longer, the theory being that a judge would be a motorist also and likely be sympathetic

    Manufacturers are aware of these and do not want to create a precedent so will probably do more than they would really want to.

  15. If you have full service history, I can't imagine what could have caused the failure that Ducati wouldn't be ultimately responsible for (whether they are legally responsible might be another question).

    I mean, if you keep it full of oil and warm it up properly, where on a public road are you going to stress out a 150 bhp motor to the point of its exploding, at that mileage?

    I shall be very interested to know what they have to say about this. I would expect them to do the decent thing. It's surely some failure in a component, or a mistake bolting it together (rather less likely, wouldn't you say?).

  16. I personally have had very good customer service with Ducati in North America, so it's worth the time to talk to a dealer and try and work something out. When my lower fork casting cracked Ducati replaced the fork even though the 2 year warranty was gone.
     
  17. You can buy a third year's Ducati warranty for around £300 I think, within 18 months of buying the bike new. Fourth year is also available from Warranty Direct I believe.
